Headteacher comes up with a novel and fun way to instil school discipline

i byBenGarlish

THE headteacher of a Rib ble Valley village primary school has introduced a ground-breaking new disci pline code into the classroom which aims to involve pupils,

staff and parents. Mr "Brian Beresford, head

teacher' of Whalley CE Primary School, has sent out copies to par ents of-a new and far-reaching pol icy .which calls for a Christian approach to discipline in all

very, early stage, with anemometers on Burns Moor, to the rear of the

.Greystones, and close to the summit of Weets Hill, above Barnoldswick, mea suring wind speeds as part of an environmental impact assessment to determine the suitability of the site for turbines. This can take up to two

years to complete, and no planning application would be made before then, said RES wind farm developer

Helen King. “We would also hold pub

lic exhibitions and meetings to show what was planned,”

she said. The scenic location of the

site - the turbines would be visible for miles around - is bound to mean the plans would a t tra c t opposition from groups such as the Ramblers’ Association. There are currently no

wind farms in the Ribble Valley. The most recent application, in the Chipping

area, was turned down. The borough council's

policy relating to renewable energy states th a t it will support the development of schemes, providing th a t it can-be shown th a t they would not cause unaccept able harm to interests of acknowledged importance in the local environment. Mr Evans objected to the policy when it went to the public inquiry. "Turbines pay lip service to alte rn a t iv e energy

th a t he is all in favour of renewable energy sources, but has grave reservations about proposals to erect wind turbines on Burns Moor. "Wind farms can be a ter

rible blot on the horizon - visible for miles around. They can too easily indus trialise the landscape," he

said. Renewable Energy said

the wind farm would gener ate up to 12 megawatts of power per hour, enough to meet the annual needs of up to 15,000 homes. Wind farms are among

the renewable energy forms to which the Government made a long-term commit ment this week. The nearest one to the

site is run by RES a t Cliviger, and another one is expected to open in the Bacup area in a few months’

time.

Ribblesdale High School, Clitheroe, has been promoted from his post as an assistant director at Dunlop Heywood Ltd, Manches ter, and remains in charge of its building consultancy department. He started it some five years ago

after obtaining varied experience in the London area and i t has

I expanded progressively since then. Dunlop Heywood has a large

headquarters in Manchester and two offices in London, as well as others in Yorkshire. There is a five- strong team in Mr Burgess's department, surveying property of various types all over the country for condition and value, and over seeing construction and conversion

contracts. Most of the work is commercial

and industrial, often involving ownership changes to large premis es for sale and leaseback and other similar operations. Mr Burgess has recently become

a member of the Association of Planning Supervisors, reflecting his long experience in advising clients about the best way of han dling the alteration or construction of property. The qualification has numerous aspects, including iden tifying the safest way of approach ing the work and ensuring contrac

tors adopt it. Mr Burgess, who lives in Bolton-

by-Bowland, went to Blackburn College after leaving Ribblesdale, and then obtained his degree in building surveying a t Leicester Polytechnic. He has since added other qualifications including ARICS and MBEng as well as
