MR JOHN BAILEY takes a step up a possible piece o f maritime history and wonders whether the ornate cast iron staircase in the entrance o f Castle Cement’s main office once graced the Gunard liner Mauretania

b y S t ew a r t P im b le y

T he days of the luxury trans-Atlantic liner may

on in a Castle Cement building is a piece of maritime history — a staircase believed to have once been part of the Maureta

be long gone, but living nia.

. If maritime experts can confirm the staircase’s origins, it will serve as a lasting reminder to one Clitheroe man of his family’s famous seafaring

past.- • :f • Mr John Bailey (64), of Somerset

Avenue, is a descendent of Arthur Rostron, the captain of the Maureta nia and later the Carpathia, the ship which rescued the 705 survivors of the Titanic disaster. The link between the Cunard liner Mauretania and the ornate cast iron staircase in the entrance hall of Cas tle Cement’s main office was suggest

e d following a recent letter to the Advertiser and Times. It was from a curious reader wanting confirmation that a Clitheroe public building was home to a staircase from a scrapped liner. Several readers contacted our office, claiming the staircase had been taken

from the one-time Blue Riband win ner and was now installed at the offices. A search through Castle Cement’s archives revealed that the company had once been owned by Sheffield-based Thomas Ward, a. steel company specialising in scrap. It is believed the firm scrapped the

ship at a yard in Rosyth, Scotland, in 1935 and the staircase from the pas senger deck was installed in the

newly-built offices shortly after wards. The Liverpool Maritime Museum’s

archive department confirmed that the liner had been sold for scrap to a company called Metal Industries, possibly a subsidiary of Thomas Ward, and its parts sold during an eight-day auction in Southampton. Mr Bailey, advertising manager for

Lancashire Enterprise, has been interested in ships since childhood and believes there is one link missing in the mystery of the staircase. He said: “Everything seems to suggest the staircase is from the Mauretania. However, it is a matter of linking Metal Industries to Thomas Ward.” He was excited to hear about the

s taircase’s possible origin and explained the family connection. “My grandmother’s cousin was

Bolton-born Arthur Rostron, the captain of the Mauretania. Stories about him have been handed down through the family and we also know that he was captain of the Carpathia, the liner which rescued the Titanic survivors,” said Mr Bailey. . History books credit Captain Ros tron and his crew with rescuing 705

. Titanic passengers from the icy Atlantic waters in the early hours o f : April 15th, 1912. His passenger ship had been heading for the Mediterranean for a spring time cruise when the distress c a l l . from the stricken T itan t ic came across the radio. Mr Bailey explained that records

show the last message received from the Titanic was “Engine room get ting flooded”. On hearing this, his ancestor took the decision to speed through 40 miles of sea, strewn with icebergs, to rescue the passengers.

SIR ARTHUR ROSTRON, the captain o f the Mauretania, of whom Mr Bailey is a descen dant

The 43-year-old captain’s ship was

first on the scene and was greeted with the sight of hundreds of people in lifeboats and others clinging oirfor'~

life in1 the sub-zero temperature water.

. . ..... His actions in answering the distress

call were universally praised for ' reducing the death toll. Captain Ros tron was later appointed a com modore in the Cunard f le e t and received a knighthood.

Mr Bailey added: “It is an unusual,

coincidence if the staircase is con firmed as coming from the Maureta nia. I find it strange that a piece of my family history — and an impor tant piece of martime history — has been in Clitheroe for 60 years and has gone unrecognised.”

better Christians. They have a divine dissatisfaction

am always coming across people who admit to me that they wish they were

with the state of their Christian lives and long to have a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. The desire is gen uine enough, but does not seem to be able to stir them into action. Wishing does not help. If we want to be profi cient in anything, we will never attain it by wishful thinking. Instead, wo will have to train our selves and undergo a series of improvement exercises. An overweight person wanting to

slim knows that it is no use wishing. They take steps to remedy the mat ter by dieting and exercise. No matter what we might excel in,

there is a necessity for constant endeavour and practice, whether

playing the piano or tennis. When people are posed the question,

How are you spiritually?”, most

say: “I do not know.” This is sign of divine dissatisfaction.

However, what do people expect?

God does not just pour spiritual sen sitivity into people in response to prayer. No one expects to be able to play a musical instrument or be pro ficient in any skill without a areal deal of practice.

,

Often people read the bible, but will get little satisfaction. Praying can

also prove to be an unsatisfactory experience. This occurs because their c k £
