small village can produce such a high standard," he said, praising the hard w o rk o f t he s h ow committee. Mrs Hazel Lansdell was presented with a bouquet

of flowers by 10-year-old Laura I laythornthwaite. Show chairman Mr Alan

Cliff welcomed a huge crowd to St Mary's Hall for the event, despite it

clashing with several other shows, including the \VI show at Billingum, which affected numbers in the handicraft sections. There was an abundance of exhibits in till the other

classes, however, with the tfti; entries being well up

on last year. The weather was much

kinder this year, which showed in the quality of the blooms and the wide choice of vegetables on display. There was a noticeable

increase in the number of exhibitors from outside the village, who were made very welcome. After the presentation

of awards by Dr Lansdell. the chairman of Salxlen Parish Council, Conn. Frank Goss, presented awards to the winners of the council's best-kept gardens eo mpet i t ion, which saw Mr David Bromley, of Padiham Road, taking the large gardens class for the seventh time.
