I AM writing with regard to your recent arti cle about threats to rural post offices as a result of the plan recently announced by the Government to privatise Royal Mail and Par-

celforee. Your readers and the general public can rest

assured that our national network of 10,500 post offices will be in a better position to serve its cus tomers as a result of proposals announced in the Government’s recent Green Paper, while Royal Mail and Parcelforec will be able to compete successfully within all sectors of the communications marketplace. Under the proposals, Post Office Counters, which

force services will continue to be available at post offices. The Government proposals spell good news for the

Post Office’s three main businesses. They afford Royal Mail and Parcelforce the type of commercial freedom they need to develop their full potential and give Post Office Counters the ability to safeguard its existing services and network. This is the means to improving services, not reducing them.

Dictatorship, not democracy

IN your correspondence about Ribble Valley becoming a unitary authority, no one has ever mentioned the fact that, if this happens, the people of Ribhle Valley will be represented by only 13 councillors, instead of 39 as at present. This is to be headed by an executive board. In the

people's case, submitted to the commission by Ribble Valley under the heading: “Achieving effective' deci sion-making,” we could retain the same number of councillors as now. However, to use its own words, Ribble Valley Coun

IS THIS REALLY CRICKET?

I HAVE just read last week’s “Advertiser and Times” report of our MP’s trip to Sri Lanka to supervise the elections there and ensure that thev were “free and fair.” I am now listening to Test Match Special on Radio

Four, where it has jus t been announced that the Second Test Match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan (in Sri Lanka) has just been cancelled because of the post- election curfew. Is there something that we should deduce from

this?

Gardening question time

I WONDER if any of your readers could answer a gardening question for me. Why is it that my hydrangea and many more in the

surrounding area where I live have plenty of healthy growth on them, but only one or two flowers, when in past years they have had numerous flowers on them around this time? In the case of my hydrangea, 1 have not pruned or done-anything with it since I planted it five years ago.
