ALTHAMS Travel Services Limited has continued the tradition started by its founder Abraham — that of service to the commu­


nity it serves. Abraham was a very


wealthy man, but also a very generous one. He made many

reporting on the death of Abraham Altham, the Colne and Nelson Times said: "Every charitable project in the town found him to be a willing finan­ cial contributor". His annual contributions included £25 to the Burnley Blue Ribbon Union. £10 to the Bank of Hope Union, £25 to the Burnley Temperance Society. He was also a very generous supporter of the Burnley YMCA, Spurgeon College and Orphanage and Dr Barnardo's. Upon the appointment of


Mr Eddie Starkie as managing director and Mr Hartley Halstead as chairman of the company in 1983, it was observed that Althams had made no recent contributions to the community. It was immediately decided to offer assistance to local organisations. Says Mr Starkie: "We
