Althams Travel - Service That Counts The trips had been mainly a means

to boost tea sales as customers had to produce packet labels to qualify for a trip. In 1877, he became a full-scale travel agent. Throughout May of that year. Altham's stores in Lancashire and Yorkshire sold tickets for a Midland Railway excursion from Colne, Keighley, Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield and Chesterfield to Birmingham. However, within a few weeks, Altham

was running his own trips and during the weeks leading up to Burnley Fair, Altham addressed himself to “Sunday School committees and others" offering good discounts to anyone and guaranteeing the sale of 100 adult tickets for trips he was running to Blackpool, Southport and Liverpool. This rapid development of his

businesses shows the extent of his excellent organisational skills, which

were without parallel in Burnley. He also announced that

"arrangements have been made with Thomas Cook and Son for a trip to London and one to Scotland".

Two hundred and thirty two people

went on the first Althams trip to London and it cost just 10 shillings for three days for those who travelled third class. Those who went first class paid £1, which was only 2s 11 d more than the single third-class fare by scheduled trains.

Tea and travel now expanded

together and at each new store there was a travel counter.

The "Prince of Tea Merchants,” as

Mr Altham was known to the popular Press, was rapidly becoming the "Prince of Travel Agents", second only to Thomas Cook and Son.

In 1884, at the age of 43, he moved

in January into his new house Oakleigh, which is now the Oaks Hotel. But in March he caught a chill while attending chapel in Haggate. He went to stay in Bournemouth and Blackpool, hoping to recover, but died on July 31st, 1885. In 13 years Abraham Altham built up

a chain of stores selling more that eight tons of tea a week to an estimated 250,000 drinkers and had grafted it on to the fastest-growing travel agency in the country. He gave the business such energy

and potential that its future success was guaranteed. His successors consolidated his gains, running his stores and travel business together until the coming of supermarkets prompted the directors to concentrate on travel alone.
