Althams Travel
package holidays by charter aircraft began in the 1960s with trips to Spain, Italy and the Balearic Isles becoming as popular with British tourists as Blackpool, Morecambe and Southport had been with the previous generation.
And, of course,
Althams was quick to appreciate the potential of the new market and turn it to the company’s advantage.
As supermarkets
became a bigger feature on the shopping front, it became clear that the Althams stores, even though the main lines had become china, glass and fancy goods — were losing the battle.
Stores in the smaller
towns of Lancashire and Yorkshire were closed with those in the large one converted to full travel agencies.
The final closure took place in 1968 and two

years later the company changed its name to Althams Travel Services Limited.
Althams had generated £100,000 to the company's turnover in the mid-1930s; by the 1950s it had grown to £'/2m. By 1965, when 10 full-licensed travel offices we re operating, the turnover topped £1 million. By 1968, with 12 offices, the figure was £1 '/2m.
The travel side of Althams has retained

its commitment to quality and customer care and retained its base in the North West. It has grown in 1994 to 31 outlets and recently came third in a national most appreciated travel agents survey organised by the Sunday Observer.
