V. )\ KM Kh K (his year has been mttahlr fur its unseasonably high temperatures. Karly in the month, I .-aw-a dragonfly over the Kibble at Grindlebm and 1 also came across the odd house lly later on. Kn»»ugh grass was growing at the month end for many farm ers still to have rattle out in the fields. Many of the wildfowl which winter hen- conn* from
Scandinavia and Russia. Tlu* colder the weather in their breeding grounds, the more likely they an- to move into Western Kurnpe. hut it usually takes fairly harsh weather there hetore they come ever to Britain in any numbers. I am. therefore, rather surprised how soon large numbers have built up at Stocks Reservoir.
Last Saturday, while visiting a friend in Yorkshire,
we went bird watching in the Washburn Valley. The s°Mth east .ami joins the
Uharfe at (Kiev. With its string oj tour reservoirs. Ihruseross. Fewston. Swinsty and Lindley Wood, it
ought to be very attractive to ducks and geese, but we only saw a few Cunuilti geese, several mallard, about six goosanders and just tw«
> gull
tile lot of them. Sunday alternoon at Stocks Reservoir could not
betw
have been more different. I estimated that there were about IbH mallard. 2(H) wigeon, lofl teal. No pochard and smaller numbers of six other species of duck, gad wall, pintail, shoveller, goosander, tufted duck and goldeneye, plus some 200 Canada nine cormorant and two grey heron. Also, many hundreds of both common ami black-
geese.
headed gulls were coming in to roost. Coupled with very good views of female sparrowhawk and great spotted woodpecker and my first-ever November oystercateher at tins site, it became obvious that there is something special about Slocks. On a site visit only two weeks ago, North West
WateCs countryside officer told me that it, too, recognises Stocks as one of its best reservoirs for wildlife and that he is keen to see the habitat improved, particularly to attract more waders in the summer months, when water levels are low. It was particularly pleasing to me to be told that this was partly as a result of my counts and observations over the years. It also hopes to provide better facilities
for visitors wishing to see the birds and other wildlife. While there, we had a good look at the Horace
Cook memorial hide. It was erected 14 years ago. using untreated timber from the local forest. Sad to sjiy, decay lists ravaged the main supports and it is now both unsightly and unsafe. We both agreed that it would have to be demolished and, fearing that the plaque, attached only to a rather rotten timber, might be stolen, we removed it. It is now in my keening. We discussed a more suitable site for a replacement'hide where^of course, the plaque will be replaced in due course. ^
