THE enterprise and business flair of Abraham Altham gave his successors a good foundation on which to further build travel success.

Mr Altham left three sons and two

daughters. The eldest son, John (1864-1898),

became a clergyman, the others, Peter (1867-1934), and Jesse

(1869-1929) went into the family business. They were two of the original board members, which also included William Holmes, and were also founders and shareholders in the Heasandford Mill Co., of Burnley. Built in 1904, it was

the first cotton mill in town in which the looms were powered by electricty and part of it is now the head office of Althams in

Netherwood Road. The business

became a limited company in 1894 with James Holgate, brother-in-law of Mr

Altham, the first chairman, who died in 1925 aged 81. Expansion continued

during his years with the company, the number of stores increasing to 80 and the further

development of the travel business. Tea was as popular as ever with 680 tons sold in the peak year of 1915. Althams operated

two self-contained travel bureaux during

the inter-war period and 52 shops sold railway tickets. Holiday horizons

extended during this period with trips abroad, particularly

those to France and

Belgium, attracting a growing number of tourists.

A cruise to Scandanavia or the

Mediterranean cost as little as £1 a day and

War II air travel began to contribute substantially to

Althams turnover as the rail system declined.
