travel side of the business almost by accident. Born in 1841, Mr Altham’s father, John, was a schoolmaster from
Haggate, and died when Abraham was only eight. When his mother, Mary Rawson, died he, along with his brother and sister, went to live with their grandfather, Abraham Rawson, who had a grocery shop in Haggate. Abraham served an apprenticeship
at Catlow Quarries, but was determined to improve himself and developed a keen interest in chapel life. He was baptised at the age of 16 and became a preacher by the age of

wholesale grocery business and bought Robert Wilson’s shop in Bridge Street. He specialised in buying chests of tea, hand sorting it into quantities
and selling it from door-to-door. He began in Brierfield and Burnley, but soon bought a warehouse in Ormerod Street and a shop in Market Street.
He eventually traded in 64 stores
selling tea, groceries, hardware and crockeiy throughout Lancashire, Yorkshire and into Lincolnshire.
In 1874, Mr Altham decided to treat
his customers and he chose Burnley Fair, an eagerly-anticipated holiday, for a day's trip to the seaside.
The Burnley Advertiser of July 25th,
1874, reported: "Mr Altham, tea merchant, of Market Place, Burnley, gave his customers in Burnley and

confidence which should always exist between seller and buyer." The 1874 outing gave Mr Altham an
enthusiasm for running trips that grew rapidly year by year. In 1875, some
7,000 customers went on excursions from Blackburn, Burnley, Darwen Farnworth, Halifax, Huddersfield and Leeds, the towns in which his tea
business was becoming a household word.
