Over the years, Clitheroe. like many rural stations, fell into decline and, in lbblH was a victim of the Beeching axe.
In May. the Kibble
Valley Council e a rn ed out an a r ts audit, which highlighted the need for exhibition space tor local and visiting artists.
Now, the s ta t io n house has been restored to its former glory, housing a multi-use ar ts and visi to r c en t r e and an ar t g a l le ry in c o rp o r a tmg display stands and up- to-date informat ion on local attractions.

Autumn colours have been quite splendid, with lots of berries in the hedgerows for the birds. On the river bank, I have seen robins wrens, blackbirds and thrushes. Blue, great and long-tailed tits have been around in great numbers. To help keep the birds going through any rough weather I have been tieing lumps of fat in the trees and

hedgerows, away from four-legged predators. Kingfishers have been seen above and below Edisford Bridge, upstream of
iMitton Bridge, Ribchester and Alston. Providing we do not get a bad winter thev will survive. The warm nights and heavy rain were jus t what we wanted The Ribble has been in excellent condition, with water temperatures between 5( and
f>- degrees. Fishing has been good for chub and barbel. The top baits are levered luncheon meat and bread crust.
For barbel, the top swims have been Church Deeps, Red Scar Wood Duck
Island and the Ripe Bridge swim downstream of Alston. These same areas are also good for chub. If chub are your quar ry, you do not have to go so C Upstream of Kdisford Bridge, on the left-hand hank, controlled by Hyndburn mii Blackburn AA, you can expect good chub on legered bread, but you need to be quiet, as the water is often shallow and clear. _ November was a good month for rainbow trout fishing at Barnsfold Water near Chipping. I bad one excellent day. It was blowing a very strong soulh-we^terlv and was very mild. I tackled up with two Sage 11 ft din. rods for size (i lines floater, the other a slow sinker. On the lat ter I used 12ft tapered leader to dibs fishing a size 12 black Shipman’s buzzer on the point and a size lit nheasant t-iii nymph on the dropper. Al ter loading the boat, I st rapped on my lifejacket, star ted the engine and
moved off to the windswept bank. Fifteen yards out, I dropped both anchors swinging boat is useless. No way can you fish a team of flies correctly
Then it happened. A big fish crashed out of the water. Another followed then
three or four more. Fry scat tered in all directions. The rainbows had herded them into the margins and were feeding avidly. Sometimes a fish would iimm d e a r of the water , chasing one of the bait-sized fish — onlv one wav i J fiJ, and that is with a muddler minnow stripped across the surface.

fine fish. The other fish weighed between 2 and Y,lbs. I k ep t 'a brace of two j iounders and released the other s in the water . It is so easy with barbless
If you fancy a day at Barnsfold Water , ring O'l'.lo filfiSli for details.
