Until ELTEC, the East Lancashire Training and Enterprise Council was established, Lambert Howarlh used to send its staff far and wide on extended training courses. Now ELTEC meets all the company’s training needs, and has them delivered locally.

Over the past two years, about 80 management and staff have been involved in Lifeume Training, with a programme of courses that are specially tailored to develop the skills needed by the company. With locally based training and less time off-site, people have the opportunity to put their learning into practice within hours, not days.

Blazing a trail in fire safety

B R IG H T sparks from St Mary’s RC Primary School, Langho, have blazed a winning trail in an area fire safety quiz.

Fitzmauricc, Tommy H a u l W O l ’t h kol\J O’Reilly and Andrew Cie-

David Riding, Andrew

zarek, with Mark Skoczen as reserve, claimed the Elackburn-Ribble Valley area trophy, after outshin ing a large number .of schools across the district and then beating Bren- nand’s Endowed, Slaid- burn, in a closely-fought

final. The St Mary’s team

went on to an East Lanca shire final in Burnley, involving 12 area teams, and took the runners-up

spot. The quiz was organised

by the East Lancashire Fire Liaison Panel, com-

prising expert fire preven tion officers from the County Fire Service.

’ ~§t Mary’s entered an all-boys side because girls, who were taking part in a choir festival at Freck- leton, were not available for selection. Head teacher Mr Peter

Keegan said: “ The lads amazed their parents with their fire safety know ledge. They answered questions on basic fire pre vention and hardly put a foot wrong when it came to detailed technical know ledge about such things as fire extinguishers. In the, end, they lost the overall final by just one wrong answer.”
