Familiar faces back at Shawbridge I U H L H Clitheroe 0, Atherton Lit 1
IT was a happy return to Shawbridge lor ex-Clitheroe manager Dave Morris, as his Atherton team inflicted painful defeat on the
Blues. A hotly-disputed penalty decision proved to be
the undoing of the Blues, who had battled hard and were unfortunate to go down in such circumstances. Shawbridge had a feel of nostalgia about it, the
visitors fielded three former Clitheroe players, one of which was goalkeeper Andy Hills, who had a spell as player-manager during his time with the Blues. How ever, it was the ex-Clitheroe captain, Paul Burrows, who slotted in the second half penalty which con demned the Blues to defeat. The fact that the match was played at all was a
tribute to the Clitheroe ground staff, who worked hard to prepare the pitch after all the heavy rain.
The poor conditions played their part though, and Clitheroe found them hard to adapt to. Atherton, second in the league, were the more
eager team in the early stages. Former Blackburn Rovers forward Tony Diamond should have done better with a shot following a goalmouth scramble. Clitheroe’s attacking partnership of Heyes and

CL1T11EROE travelled to Stanley Park, Blackpool,
to meet the Division Two leaders, on astro-turf. The game started fairly
evenly, but Poulton piled on the pressure early in the match, with play remaining in midfield for
most of the first half. Poulton scored shortly
■before half-time, from a break-away ball. The second half saw
Clitheroe come out much more dominant and deter mined. The players moved the ball around very well and there were some excellent moves up front, which unfortunately did not result in any goals, although there were some ; v e ry good shots, all

Baker was well stifled by the Atherton centre backs, and they struggled to make the breakthrough. The Blues looked more dangerous when they got
wide, Mark Heyes put a teasing cross over which deceived the keeper, but an alert Atherton defender cleared itupfield. Minutes later Clitheroe threatened again, Shaun Bursnall broke through at speed but shot narrowly
over. However, it was the visitors who were nearest
to a goal in the first half, Clitheroe full back Andy King was forced to make a crucial goaline clearance after Atherton’s Shaun Parker had beaten Under wood from close range. Underwood safely collected a Tony Diamond cross-
cum-shot, before the Blues rallied at the other end. Ian Monk picked up the ball 30 yards out and beat
two opposing defenders, but hit a curling shot straight at the keeper. Soon after, Butcher shot wide from 20 yards. The interval arrived a bit too soon for Clitheroe who were beginning to get on top of their opponents. The visitors were the livelier team at the start of
the second half, and Underwood was called upon to make three competent saves. Clitheroe were playing some good passing football
in their attempt to master the conditions, typified by a superb ball from Ian Monk which beat the off-side flag and sent Bursnell clean through. As Bursnell shaped up to shoot, he was brought down crudely from behind by Stuart Humphries on the edge of the box. As the referee went to summon the Atherton
midfielder, Andy Hills came racing out of his goal and squared up to the man-in-the-middle, offering his opinions on the incident in no uncertain terms. Humphries and Hills were lucky that the cards issued were yellow and not red. When play finally resumed, Darryl Adams disappointingly shot over. In the 68th minute Atherton survived a penalty appeal for handball, after Manley had chipped the
ball into the Atherton area. Ironically, Atherton won a penalty at the other end two minutes later. The Atherton centre-back Mark Stewart found
himself in an unlikely forward position when King put in a seemingly innocuous challenge, but the referee pointed to the spot and Paul Burrows stepped up to convert the penalty, sending Dennis Underwood the
wrong way. Immediately after the restart, Ian Monk was clob
bered with an outrageous challenge from Stewart, who made no attempt to win the ball, and left Monk needing lengthy treatment. Stewart was fortunate to. play any further part in the proceedings. At this point Clitheroe looked keyed up enough to
hit back with an equaliser, but they lacked the killer touch in front of goal, this was proved in the 85th minute when substitute John Riley delivered a pin point cross which Bursnell met with a firm header, only to see an Atherton defender clear the ball off the line. The other substitute, Mick Graham, was also close
with two late attempts from the edge of the box, but that was the story of the day for the Blues. Clitheroe: Underwood, King, Tattersall, Adams,.
Manley, Dawson, Monk, Butcher, Baker, Heyes, Bursnall. Subs: Graham, Riley.

" The home side threw men forward in the hope of
a reprieve, but their efforts were thwarted, thanks to a splendid double save from Blues’ keeper Nuttall. With ten minutes left, Mercer scored a deserved
third goal and Clitheroe might-have made it 4-0, but for the goalkeeper at the other end, who per formed heroics in the Colne goal. When the Reserves continue to produce perfor

CLITHEROE’S five match winning run came to a disappointing end in a battle of the roses
at Grassington. Wharfedale, always
strong on their own patch, started the strongest with . their tall line-out forwards
winning plenty of pos session. Strong tackling in midfield prevented the home side from penetrat ing tile Clitheroe defence. 11 was a forward move
from Wharfedale which led to Clitheroe opening the scoring. A crushing tackle by wing, Mike Gonella, produced a loose ball for centre, Kris Tyas, to pounce on. He outpaced tlie home defence for a fine opportunist try to put Clitheroe in front at the
interval. There was a terrible
start to the second half for Clitheroe, when the kick off was not secured pro perly, and Wharfedale regrouped to drive home a try under the posts. Clitheroe’s pack were
then put under a long period of pressure, but they held out well and fought strongly in the scrums. Wharfedale went into the lead after they capitalised on a strange decision by the referee who gave them a free- kick. Clitheroe were still w o n d e r i ng w hat the offence was, when the home team’s scrum half sniped in to put his back row over for the score. The Littlemoor side

Clitheroe rallied for the try they needed to win the match, but despite an excellent run from hanker, Steve Taylor, lady luck was not with them and

CLARET AND
BLUE
A new column which looks at the action at Turf Moor and Ewood Park
No return for Bond
BOTH Burnley and Blackburn Rovers supporters have an intriguing weekend ahead, albeit for very different reasons. Burnley entertain Shrewsbury Town in the-
second round of the F.A. Cup at Turf Moor. Their visitors, high-flying in division three, are man aged by the controversial ex-Clarets boss John Bond. However, Bond obviously feels that a return to
Burnley could be putting his own safety at risk. Clarets supporters blame Bond for the decline
of the club following his ili-fated reign in the inid- SOs and it was felt many were planning a recep tion of hatred towards him. He was responsible for draining the club’s resources during his short stint
at Turf Moor, by releasing great young players and replacing them with his ex-Manchester City
favourites, who were past their “sell by date.” Bond took the decision not to return to Burnley
— “in the interests of football,” according to' a Shrewsbury Town statement. Burnley have an injury doubt over forward John
Clayton, who went off the field injured at Bolton on Saturday. Striker Mike Conroy will almost cer tainly return to the side after his two-match suspension, and could well replace Clayton. A visit to the North East awaits Blackburn
Rovers on Saturday. Back to winning ways in tlie league last week
end, thanks to Alan Shearer, Rovers will be confi dent of maintaining their unbeaten away record at Ayrcsome Park, where Middlesbrough have failed to win in recent weeks. Match tickets are available from the Rovers’ -
ticket office. ■
