TAKING a crisis and making- it into an opportunity — that’s the role that Brook is taking on with more and more young people from all over East
Lancashire. And the word is out
that the trained staff at Burnley’s Brook Advi sory Centre really can help with contraception and sexual problems, as the ever-increasing number of young peo ple visiting the centre proves. In the year up to
March, the centre had an average of 14 young people at its twice weekly clinic sessions — that’s 37% up on the previous year. “When young people
come to us in a crisis situation, sometimes it’s as if they are hop ing the problems will
just disappear of their own accord, not seeing that the longer the problems are ignored, the harder tliet may be to resolve,” said centre organiser Annie Rolf. “Often clients per-
ceive themselves as being helpless and unable to cope. They hope someone else will make everything bet ter, and that things will
just get back to the way they used to be. “Confronting prob
lems takes courage, and at Brook we do require the young peo ple themselves to par ticipate. We help cli ents to recognise that a crisis can bring about changes for the bet ter,” she added. But it’s all too often
that young people (most of those attend ing the centre are aged 24 or under) are facing a crisis, such as an unwanted pregnancy, when they do first meet the Brook team of trained doctors, nurses and counsellors. Whatever the prob
lem, however, the Brook staff have been trained to help the young person involved make their own deci sion about their future and how they are going to resolve their partic ular problem. And figures show
that more and more young men are visiting Brook’s Church Street centre. In the year up to March, 79 young men passed through the centre’s doors for help and advice. “Some appear to be
taking a keen interest in their shoes on the first visit, but once they realise we’re OK, they soon face up to their sexuality,” said Annie. . “ A t Brook we ’ re always keen to promote
joint responsibility for contraceptive care and sexual health, and many young people attend the centre as a couple.”
But Brook’s work is
not confined solely to the centre — providing contraceptives, smear testing and pregnancy tests, as well as emo tional support and advice.
There’s also a thriv
ing education service, run by Mary Speak, who works in schools and colleges, telling students about the role of Brook and helping to train youth workers. “ I t sh o u ld be
everyone’s right to choose firstly when,

ANNIE helps to counsel young people and help them overcome their problems
and indeed whether, to have a family and secondly when and whether to be sexual. Yet often young people do not actually make these choices. “ They are thrown
into situations not of their choosing, some how finding themselves pregnant or having a sexual relationship that they do not want or may not e v en be enjoying. “ In order to make
choices in life you need two things — informa tion and skills — and education involves both of these. ” Said Annie: “ A t
Brook we don’ t just dole out pills and con
doms — we allow young people time to talk about their feel ings and ideas, to help them develop healthy and positive attitudes to w a rd s s ex a n d relationships. “Above all, at Brook
we listen because we care about how young people are feeling.” ©The Brook clinic is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6-30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the top floor o f 79 Church Street, Burnley (yellow d o o r o p p o s i te St Peter’s Church). The clinic is also
open for non-medical counselling on Mondays from 10 a.m.
