A DRAMATIC reunion awaited Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. John Travis-and television actor Ronald Pickup during
filming of “The Riff Raff Element.” Die BBC learn invited the Mayor to visit its
location at Knowlemere Manor, Cow Ark. unaware that Coun. Travis was an old acquaint ance of I lie actor.
they lirst met in the ltlolls, when the Mayor
was at teacher training college in Chester and the actor was a sixth-form student at the city King’s School. The Mayor, now headmaster at Fiilwood High School, was playing Mark Antony in a college production of Shakespeare's “Julius Ciiesnr” and Mr Pickup had been cast in the same role at his school.
So.the actor’s lather. Mr Ernie Pickup, a lecturer at the col lege, asked Coun. Travis to give a few words of advice about the part. And when the two met again for the first time
in .'ill years, the memories came flooding hack. “ You have made my day very happy. It lias
brought hack many wonderful memories of my father and my schooldays in Chester,” said the actor.
In turn, the Mayor, who has pledged his efforts to furthering the arts during his year of
office, said lie hud been thrilled to watch televi sion actors at work. Conn. Travis, accompanied hv the Mayoress,
Airs Elizabeth Travis, was introduced to other actors and the production team.
. 1 hey told me they have all been immensely impressed with the countryside and pubs in the Kihhlc > alloy, said Conn. Travis, who is pic tured almve with Mr Pickup. “They have also made use ot local produce, fish and meat from Clitheroe, for instance, so their stav in the area
has brought various spin-offs for the local economy. ’
