A TOY appeal is the order of Christmas for Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. John Travis, who hopes to spread good tidings among the area’s needy children. The appeal is being

organised in conjunction with the Round Table, which will also distribute the presents. Anyone who wishes to

donate new or good qual ity second-hand■toys can take them to the Ribble Valley council offices, on Church Walk, at any time during office hours. Further details are

available from the Mayor’s s e c r e t a r y , 0 1 w e n Saunders (C l ith e ro e 25111, ext. 3059).

crushed the pot-hole problem on the track to the Ribble Valley Conservation Group barn, in Bashall Eaves. Tarmac Roadstone Ltd contributed the four truck-

loads of “crusher run” from its Bankfield Quarry in Clitheroe.

Mrs Linda Martin, secretary of the conservation

group, said it has a 10-year lease on the barn, which is being converted into a base. The gravel is being used to improve the mile-long drive, as well as to level part of the floor inside the barn. Mrs Martin said that half of the floor was actually a

mixture of cobbles, tiles and concrete, which was being left intact as an illustration of the changes in materials used over the past 200 years in the Ribble Valley.

She thanked Mr Peter Christy for delivering the

gravel and Kays equipment hire for the loan of a road roller.

Mrs Martin is pictured with Bankfield Quarry man

ager Mr Reg Mason and other members of a work party, led by group treasurer Mr David Hamilton. Anyone interested in joining the group, which

has recently been tree-planting in the Forest of Bowland and coppicing at Cross Hill Quarry, can contact Mrs Martin (Clitheroe 23954) or chairman Mr Terry Haworth (0254-822944).

Pay shock for former workers

WORKERS at the former Colne children’s clothing manufacturers Evora Ltd, including several Clitheroe people, have received a nasty shock — they have been asked to pay National Insurance contributions they thought had already been paid.

About 50 workers at the

clothing factory, which had a retail outlet in Clith eroe, lost their jobs in December, 1990, when the c o m p a n y w ent into liquidation. No w many of them have

recieved letters from the Department of Social Security stating that records show they made no National Insurance con tributions from April 1990

Windsor fire shock for local vicar

WHILE the nation watched television pictures of a fire-gutted Wind sor Castle, one local vicar was particularly shocked.

The Rev. Quentin Wil

son, Rural Dean of Whal- lcy and Vicar of St Leon ard’s, Langho, worked at the ancient castle some years ago. He said: “ I was very

shocked by the news. Having worked there, it was like seeing one’s own home burning down. 1

fo rm e r c o l le a g u e s helping.” Mr Wilson (40) held a

post at St G e o rg e ’ s Chapel, a part of the castle which escaped damage. He was appointed Succentor and Dean’s Vicar in 19S1, shortly before the mar

riage of the Prince and Princess of Wales. His responsibilities included the care of castle residents and estate workers. A gifted organist, he

also organised music and worship in the chapel. After leaving in 1984,

Mr Wilson came to the Ribble Valley with his wife Jackie and two daughters, Jennifer and Isobel.

TWO Clitheroe ceramics experts are hoping that local people will go potty over their exhibition in Wliallev Library.

Mr Don Askew and his

wife, Ann, will present a display of their pottery from Monday until Christ mas. On show will be a collection of stoneware pottery and ceramic sculp

tures, varying from deli cate pierced work to land scaped and rockscaped plant pots and vases. The couple previously

taught ceramics in Derby shire, whilst exhibiting and carrying out commis sions over the north of England. They returned to the Ribble Valley four years ago and now work from home.

to December 1990. The workers have been

told that, i f they wish their state pension funds to be unaffected, they must pay the contributions before the end of this financial year. Some have been asked for as mucli as £250. According to the work

ers, the money lias already been paid — it was taken out of their wages at source while they were working at Evora. Now they have got

together and contacted Pendle MP Gordon Pren tice to see if lie can sort out the mix-up. Tile message to all the

affected workers is clear — don’t pay anything until further information is available. A spokesman for the

workers said: “A lot of the workers are very worried about this and they fear their pensions will have been affected. Something has gone wrong and until we find out what it is nobody should pay a penny. It is a big shock and has come at the worst t im e , ju s t b e fo r e Christmas. “It may take time, but I

am sure we can get it sorted out.”
