EVERY day a new disaster struck. We were moving
into our first house — a century-old mid-terrace, smack on the side of Pen- dle Hill — a cottage with beamed ceil in gs , b e a u t i fu l views, an open fire and gardens. Most importantly, •
we had found ourselves a p l a c e w i t h “potential.” Give it a dam]) proof
course and a rewire, maybe a touch of paint,
and we would be in business, we thought, conjuring up images of our soon-to-be beautiful home. Then the builders arrived. And suddenly
jo b s s t a r t e d to snowball. First, the joiners came to spray for
woodworm. The house, they found, was still en t ir e ly furnished upstairs. We rushed for a removal man. Then the damp proof
and drilling — began. As the house erupted in a puff of dust, the plaster started to fall, and not from anywhere we intended. Bits of ceiling tumbled floor- wards, uninvited, occa sionally landing on our weary heads. An army of plaster
ers marched onto the battlefield of debris and chaos that had become our home. Someone suggested
we ask’ a plumber for advice about our cen tral heating system. He looked.and laughed. That had to go. A kitchen designer
paid a visit and the culinary palace we had envisaged shrank to munchkin proportions
at giant prices. Throughout, we tried
to remind ourselves of the potential all around us, a task made more difficult by incidents such as the builder who mistook my husband for a workman and made a disheartening comment about our chimney.
In the midst of this,
we moved in, despite our lack of a kitchen — not even a sink or hot
water. At the same time,
my sister arrived from America, my parents in-law from Scotland and several awe-struck friends from Manches ter and London.
All, thankfully, ear
nestly praised the potential of our new home and joined in gra ciously with the endless grubby chores at hand. L e f t to our own
devices eventually, we took on the bedrooms successfully, and bath room unsuccessfully, when experiments with green' paint resulted in the most abominable of s tomach-churning colours.
Outside, my husband
planted a lawn and I dug the front garden, until I saw the slimy in h a b i ta n t s . We seemed to have the King Kong of slugs and his entire family occu pying our patch of soil.

David L ew is , who monitored the bank’s nationwide birthday study among 300 11 to 20 year olds, said: “Youngsters clearly get a kick out of giving to their families — and saving up to do it. “ I t ’s a comfortable

A few months into
life at our cottage, the potential factor is still strong — the actual reality something less than perfect, and occa- s io n a l ly u t t e r l y discouraging.
But som e tim e s ,
when the lights are dim and a fire crackles away in the sitting room, the house begins to feel like that magical thing called home.
