NW England and next year. The Policy and Resources
THE Ribble Valley Council will help to set .up, two displays aimed at promoting tourist traffic between MW England and the Pas de Calais region of France
Committee agreed to spend not more than £100 on helping to put on two "workshops” -—. one in France in February and one in the NW in May — to promote the virtues of the two
regions to each other. Other English organisations
involved ■ in discussions are Blackpool Borough Council, Blackpool Hotels Association, the British Heritage, the NW Tourist Board, and Red Rose
Tours. The cost to Ribble Valley
would include a trip by one of ficer to the workshop in France, and a contribution to
the display in the NW. Our Mayor and Mayoress will be invited free of charge to the event in France. C om m i t t e e m em b e r s
agreed they should proceed with caution when it came to promoting tourism, but felt they should keep in touch with the developments that were
taking place.
NAVY LARK
PUPILS at Bowland County Secondary School, Anthony Walmsley, 15, of Beechthorpe Avenue, Waddington, and Sam Smith, 16, of Throstle Bank, West Bradford, have just spent a week with the
Royal Navy. . They took a course at HMS
Ca l e d o n i a , a s ch o o l o f e n g in e e r in g at Rosyth. Anth ony and Sam were among 15 boys who took part in a course designed to show them what to expect if they fo l low ed an engineering career in the service. They had a trip down the
Firth of Forth, did some rifle shooting, went swimming and played five-a-side football.
Right timing Winner of our final Whalley
Road shopping guide competi tion is Mrs Joan Watson, of Abbeyfields, Whalley, who receives a voucher worth £6. Mother-of-two Mrs Watson,
a machinist at Finworth Plas tics, Whalley, plans to put the prize towards a new dress. “ It’s arrived just in nice time for Christmas,” she said.
Tablers spread a little cheer
MEMBERS o f Clitheroe Round Table will be spreading a bit of Christmas cheer round the town next week —- and hoping for a little in return. . They will be touring diffe
rent parts of . the town on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening, collecting
: cans of food and donations for Christmas parcels for the elderly. A suitably adapted open
backed lorry or Land Rover and trailer will be used for. transport and Santa will be one of the passengers. There will be taped carol
singing and a bell will sound to announce the arrival of the wagon. On Tuesday, it will be, in the Henthom and Edisford area; Wednesday in the Peel' Park and Whalley Road area and Thursday around Woone Lane, Castle View and Bawd- lands. On th e T u e sd a y and
Wednesday, other Tablers will be out carol singing in va r iou s pubs and hotels' throughout the area. If the t o u r in g venture proves successful, it will become an annual feature of the Round Table’s charity work.
Visual treat.
A SLIDE presentation enti tled "Britain Beautiful” was given by CPRE representa tive Mr Stanley Jeeves at a public meeting organised by Clitheroe Civic Society on Monday evening. Music by Delius, Sibelius,
Vaughan Williams and Elgar accompanied the 90 minute show, the only spoken words being an introduction by Mr Jeeves. Almost 100 attended the meeting in Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, and thanks were expressed to Mr Jeeves by Civic Society chair man Mr Ed Hill.
