CONGRATULATIONS were pouring in for . children and staff at Thornley C of E School after their presenta tion of the. Nativity, in Chip- p in g P a r ish -C h u r ch bn Sunday. Of the school’s 50 children
only one, Pauline Harrison was unable to be there. Unfortunately Pauline, who was to have played the innk eeper’s wife, was in bed with ’flu. The infants, dressed as
angels in long white dresses and gold crosses, began the service with a little-dance to the. tune "Ding dong merrily on high." The large congregation
joined the children in singing carols. Main parts in the Nativity
were played by Sarah Kellet (Mary), Clifton Carefoot (Joseph) and Michael Ellison, Alan Airey and Joseph Wilson (three Kings). Christine Sanderson, as the angel, narrated the story, and Julie Pye and Caroline Robinson also played angels. The church was decorated
with large murals of a choir, th e th r e e k in g s and a partridge in a pear tree. Headmistress Mrs Irene

LOCAL musicians joined forces with the professional James Donaldson Band at the weekend to provide an even in g ’ s en te r ta inm en t at Waddington Social Club. All 120 tickets were sold out
in advance and the monthly folk and country and Western
nights seem destined to become a popular feature of the club's social life. The band, winners of I TV’s
“Opportunity Knocks," played mainly country-style material. But it was the performances of Clitheroe musicians Steve Walmsley and John Green
w o od which w e re best received by the audience. John sang several well-
known folk songs and Steve played a number of intricate instrumentals. A hot potato supper was
provided by Mrs Irene Cox. The next musical evening at
the club will be on January 14th when the main act will be Cottonwood, a country and W e s t e r n g r o u p f r om Padiham.

CLITHEROE Ranger Guide Bernadette Marsden, of Eshton Terrace, is looking forward to a very special date in the New Year . . . when she goes to Buckingham Palace to receive her Duke of Edinburgh gold award. Queen’s Guide Bernadette
(18) was among other Guides of SS Michael and John’s at a presentation night and social in the Catholic Youth Club. She received her gold brooch from Clitheroe town mayor Coun. John Blackburn, who was invited to present the awards.
Firm fined £100 for underweight meat deliveries
A FIRM of butchers :-which denied summonses of delivering short weight of meat to two Ribble Valley schools was fined a total of £100 and ordered to pay
£30.60 costs by Clitheroe magistrates. Edward Slinger and Sons,
of Whalley Road, Clayton-le- Moors, were said to have su p p l ie d Pendle Junior School, Clitheroe, and Grind- leton CE Primary School with less meat than indicated on delivery tickets.
A delivery of shoulder and
chuck steak to the Clitheroe school should have weighed 36'A lbs. but weighed only 33 lb s . , the court heard. A consignment of ox kidney for the Grindleton school weighed lib. 9V4oz., instead of 2!bs., although four lbs. of chuck steak in the same order was 2'Aoz. Overweight. The firm was fined £50 on each of two summonses.
Mr S t e p h e n B a c o n ,
prosecuting for the Lanca shire County Council, siid the discrepancies came to light- when, an inspector from-the Office of Fair Trading paid a routine visit to the tivo schools, After checking the weighing equipment at each canteen, he inspected recent deliveries of meat.
Mr Lesli'e Hull, defending, said that Siingors delivered GO
tons of meat a week to schools and were under contract to supply some 600 schools in Lancashire.
Two hours had elapsed, he
said, between delivery of the meat and the arrival of the inspector. “According to the law, a trader is guilty if he supplies'goods that are at any time less than stated on the document that accompanies them,” he said,
"This puts the trader in an
impossible situation because ortce he has made his delivery he will not be there to see if anything happens that could account for a discrepancy between the goods and the invoico." Canteen assistants at both
schools had signed the invoi ces which, said Mr Hull, was the best possible evidence that the correct weight of meat was delivered. "There is, however, a gap
over what happened in the kitchens after the meat was delivered. It Would always have been pdsSible for some one to take some of the meat before the inspector arrived,” Tie suggested
Bernadette, who is at
present taking A levels at Notre Dame Grammar School, Blackburn, studied several subjects for her award such as banking and finance and. flower arranging. She worked at Calderstones, helped at SS Michael and John’s Youth Club, arid took an . Outward Bound course at Eskdale, where she was made leader.
. The other main award — the Duke of Edinburgh silver pin and certificate — was presented to Ranger Guide Mary Byrne (17), of Primrose Villas, Clitheroe.
Mary, a student nurse at
Blackburn Royal Infirmary, did a project about children. She also studied flower arranging, worked at Calder s ton e s and went on an Outward Bound course to Berchtesgarten in Germany.
Bronze pins and certificates
were awarded to Guides Elizabeth Brown, Sallie Anne Wareing, Patricia Fox, Judith Hutchinson and Michelle Rogerson.
The patrol award shield,
w on b y Sw a l low s was collected by leader Anne Byrne. The best patrol leader was Elizabeth Parkinson and guide of the year was Wendy
Wilson. Both received Parker pens. During the evening, parents
were asked for their co operation to raise money for a proposed new headquarters for Guides, Brownies, Scouts and Cubs.
The premises — former
stables in Lowergate — and a sum of money havo been given to them by the parish and planning permission for reno vation is being sought.
Guides pictured with their
certificates are, from the left, back row — Wendy Wilson, Patricia Fox, Sallie Anne Wareing, Michelle Rogerson, Elizabeth Brown* Elizabeth Parkinson. Front! — Mary Byrne, Bernadette Marsden, Judith Hutchinson.
