Protest at new water 'charge system
TWO Ribble Valley Council lors are to seek a meeting with th e N o r th West Water Authority to protest about the introduction of “direct billing” for the NWWA’s sewerage charge.
At present the charge is
collected for the Authority by the Ribble Valley, but the Authority proposes to start collecting the charge itself, at an extra estimated cost of over £2 million a year.
Ribble Valley Borough
Treasurer Mr Gordon Onslow told the Policy and Resources committee: “We are already doing this work. It is a simple matter to add this other charge onto our own bill.
“The introduction of direct
billing would mean unneces sary duplication of work.”
The committee agreed that
its chairman, Coun. Bill Flem ing, and vice chairman, Coun. Leo Wells, should meet the water authority to put the objections as soon as possible.
CLITHEROE pensioners helped to raise funds for their own Christmas parties with a nearly new sale at Stanley House on Saturday. The, sale brought in £23 for
the Clitheroe Branch of the National Federation of old age pensions .a ssociations, and the money will go towards two parties being put on for the branch’s members, one at the Swan and Royal Hotel and one at Stanley House. Bad weather kept some
shoppers at home on Satur day, but there was still a steady stream of visitors to see the selection of clothing on sale in Stanley House. Pictured are visitors and
helpers with some of the garments on sale.
Reunion
IT was a night for nostalgia when 35 retired members of the nursing staff at Calder- stones and the present long serving staff had an informal get-together at the Spread Eagle, Barrow, on Friday. The evening was organised by Sister C. T. Muehleder, or

evening Sister Muehleder would like to have an even bigger reunion next year. Retired staff who would like to attend, should telephone her at Calderstones (Whalley 2121, ext. 212) in the New Year.
Social for regulars
THE dozen or so regular bridge players in a winter class at the Pendle Club, Clitheroe, enjoyed their Friday afternoon classes so much that they decided to “ bridge the gap” between sessions by continuing to meet and play all summer. It helped them to keep in touch with each other and on top of the game. Last week they made a
social occasion of their meet ing, with two bottles of wine and refreshments. Winners of the game were Mrs A. Barber and Mr P. Strange, with Mrs K. Brabbing and Mr F. Walker second.

A damp reward
A DUCKING in Sabden Brook was the .somewhat dubious reward fo r the village’s all-girl football team at the end of a charity match on Sunday. . In a way, however, it was
hardly surprising. For the girls beat Sabden FC 11-7 in this strictly-for-Iaughs game for the Barry Rainford mobile kidney unit appeal fund. The match was organised
by Sabden schoolgirl Cathy Rimmer, who had quite a successful football debut, scoring half her side’s goals. The other scorers were Shir ley Lambert, Susan Lansdell and Lorretta Bromley. The teams played 25
minutes each way on the pitch behind the Pendle1 Witch Hotel — quite long enough in the wintry conditions which kept many supporters away. The girls raised £8 from the
match. Referee was Mr Colin Cook.
The next fund-raising event
is a charity concert tonight at the King’s Arms, Clitheroe.
