f jijumiu!».« « — WISHING YOU A HAPPY...?

School carol aervicos (from the beginning of December onwards), mimes, plays,'chanty appoals, office parties, shopping, baking, putting up fancy decorations (so early that they look dog-eared by Christmas Eve), the pre- Christmas rush combined with the pre-Christmas festivi ties almost guarantoo that for most of us December 25th marks not Christmas but the beginning of the end—a time when we can perhaps get away and escape, maybo to visit some long-suffering relative and keep, as we all claim wo do, a ‘quiet family Christmas.’

It would bo crying for the moon, 1 suppose, to ask that this pattern be reversed, to ask us to got back to the Church’s traditional idea of four weeks’ quiet preparation, doing without any special treats, (the season of Advent) so that Christmas comes as a thrilling, happy event deserving twelve days of festivities after December 25th.

I think nowadays wo just havo to live with the anti climax, the sad fact that the Christian festival, which is the basis of it all, loses most of its significance in the faco of the commercial jamboree which precedes it.

And yet I wonder if things are as bad as some church- pcople claim. Shepherds and wise men had their fill of spectacular and startling events in advance of knowing why. When it came to it, all they found was a baby born to a peasant woman in the stable at the back of an inn. Some anticlimax!

Perhaps, then, it is no surprise, whan man is daxxling himself with his own advertising ability, that Cod-allows tho gift of his own Son to bo recognised only by those who bothor to look. Make this, then, your ‘quiet family Christmas,’ worshipping in -the presence of God who is your loving Father, giving thanks for that baby’s birth; ' and may God’s lovo, born into this world In josus, bo presant In your homes and families this Christmas and throughout your lives.
