READ SKIPPER BREAKS LEG
(abandoned after 66 minutes) Springmill 1, Read 1 ,
READ’S away game against Springmill at Henthorn ended in' disaster for their skipper Ernie Sumner who broke a leg after 65 minutes.
Sumner' (37), of Fountains
Avenue, Simonstone, was just about to shoot from the edge of the area when he was tack led by Ian Astley. He fell awkwardly and was immediat- ley taken to Burnley Victoria
' Hospital with a badly-broken leg.
R e fe re e Mr Ian Goot
straight away abandoned the game, as conditions on the icy pitch had worsened.
Sumner, who also plays
cricket for the villagers in the Ribblesdale League and led them -to two championships when he was captain, will probably be out of the side all

part in Read’s successful start to their first season in the second division arid, his mid field skills will undoubtedly be missed.

interval was even b e tte r . Greenup chipped over a per fect ball and all Greenhalgh had to do was nod it into an empty net. There were several chances
It was Sumner who equal ’ Lions took an early lead
through Turnbull after a bad ly-taken goal kick landed straight at his feet. A poor c le a ra n c e from defence enabled Wilkinson to put the scores level and minutes later the Low Moor winger had a brilliant effort disallowed for offside.
Lions went ahead when
Campbell headed home from a corner, but Humphreys equal ised just before the interval after persistently pressing the visitors’ defence.
With the advantage of the
slope, Low Moor made it 3-2 after 50 minutes when Dean latched onto a through ball and easily beat the advancing goalkeeper.
Goals by Briggs and Turn-
bull put Lions back
in.the lead. and it looked as if they would snatch both points.
But the home side staged an
amazing comback and McLean levelled the scores with a good solo effort. Minutes before the end, he drove a low shot . just inside the post for the
winner.

IN icy conditions which made ball control very difficult, Grindleton subjected Trinity to their worst defeat of the
season. In the opening 20 minutes
both teams had difficulty in keeping their feet on the treacherous surface and play swung from end to end.
Grindleton took a two goal
lead through the opportunism of Graham Parkinson and from then on were seldom in difficulty. Towards the end of the half, Trinity mounted a series of attacks and a hopeful shot by Astin deceived the Grindleton goalkeeper to
reduce the arrears. In the early stages of the ■

WADDINGTON surged to their ninth successive league win when they completely overwhelmed Blackburn Com- b in a t io n “ h igh r id e r s " Deganwy at Twitter Lane on

dington did not see much of the ball and it was Deganwy who made the early running.
Twice in the firs t. 15 minutes the visitors had the
ball in the back of Wadding- ton’s net, but both goals were disallowed.
When Waddington did take
the lead after 25 minutes through a superb Simon Whiteside goal, there was no

Ross quickly followed and substitute Mick Yates notched up the fifth. Man of the match Simon Whiteside had what would have been his hat-trick goal disallowed but in the last minute John Nuttall con verted a penalty after a foul

Visitors

Paul McGuire was brought down in-the area after dribbl ing past four defenders.
What Payton was thinking
of when he took the kick, not even lie knows. Usually such a fine striker of the ball, he seemed to change his mind just before he shot and his attempt trickled yards past the post.
This miss was indicative of
Payton’s general perform ance. I t is often said at Shaw bridge that when Payton plays well so does the team.
On Saturday he drifted in
and out of the game and for much of the first half was merely marking time on the
right wing. New signing Keith Hollin-

ward too quickly. Making only his second
home appearance, new centre forward Keith Murray did lit tle to suggest that he could lead the attack to greater-
things. Although well over six feet, . . .
he was ineffective in the'air and he fluffed one real scoring chance when he ran into Hol-
linrake. Nevertheless, once these
two strikers settle down into Ciitheroe’s free-running style of play, they could help their side out of its troubles. Both have fine goal-scoring
