JOHN BIDDELL ONE STABLE, TWO VERY DIFFERENT HORSES

Colefax and Fowler have long been one of my favourite design houses.

For me, they epitomise that timeless, British sense of almost understated style – a look that makes you say, “Ah yes, just right”. They are also, however, the UK distributors of two other fabulous, but very different design houses – Manuel Canovas and Larsen.

Manuel Canovas is a quintessentially French fabric and wallpaper house that takes endless inspiration from rare archival documents, journeys to exotic locations and vibrant colour. Their latest collection, entitled Giverny, is no exception, bringing together global influences and the house’s distinctive savoir faire, uniting heritage and modernity through craftsmanship and innovation.

Designs rooted in 18th and 19th century archival sources are set in playful contrast with contemporary fabrics influenced by

worldwide cultures, including Uzbek ikats, Persian kilims and expressive drawings of East Asian origin. The result is a layered and characterful collection that feels both timeless and globally informed.

The title fabric Giverny is a delightful French print, inspired by a 19th-century archive document, reinterpreted in a new palette on a pure linen ground. Stylised floral ribbons reveal subtle hues and fine graphic details, balancing elegance with modern charm.

Another beautifully drawn print from the collection is Celestine. A reinterpretation of an 18th-century chintz from India’s Coromandel Coast, Celestine captures the authenticity of a hand-drawn design. Graceful arabesques and stylised florals flow in delicate rhythms, enriched by subtle hues and a charming patina that evokes timeless craftsmanship.

If Chinoiserie is your bag (and it is mine), Les Cavaliers – available as a rich velvet or a crisp linen – is a signature print,
