TAKE A BREATH

MAP ILLUSTRATES BEST BREATHING SPACES

People who live in and around Birmingham were invited by the Taskforce for Lung Health to name their favourite city location where they can enjoy their own breathing space as part of an awareness campaign around lung health.

The winning spot, with 28% of the vote, was Winterbourne House & Gardens, a unique heritage site and botanic garden on the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus. This was followed by city locations Cannon Hill Park (17%), Birmingham Botanical Gardens (15%), canal-side at Mailbox (6%) and Birmingham Library.

Each venue has been awarded a celebratory plaque and included in a brand new illustrated map, designed by local illustrator Katherine Tromans, which residents are encouraged to use to explore their city in a brand-new way this summer.

The map, which also features other popular open spaces around the city, highlights the main walking routes – and related step counts - between each of the top five breathing spaces.

LESSONS IN HEALTHY LIVING PUPILS SHOWCASE CULINARY TALENT

Pupils and teachers currently involved in the Health for Life programme, met at St. Andrew’s Stadium to showcase the exciting and creative range of activities, around growing food, healthy eating and exercise, which they have now incorporated into school life as a result of taking part in the initiative.

Students at Boldmere Junior School put their new culinary skills into practice by creating vegetable wraps, which included homemade guacamole and salsa dips, for other students and staff to enjoy whilst St Francis Catholic Primary School offered a taste of their healthy, homemade style pot noodle.

Other pupils brought along examples of the fruit, vegetables and herbs they have grown at school and some were keen to show off their physical activity favourites such as hula hooping and skipping.

FULL HOUSE FOR BINGO LAW FIRM’S CHARITY FUNDRAISER

Bingo numbers added up to a successful evening of fundraising for five charities in Coventry and Warwickshire, thanks to local law firm Alsters Kelley.

More than £2,000 proceeds will be divided between Helping Hands Community Project in Leamington, Safeline in Warwick, The Mary Ann Evans Hospice in Nuneaton, Coventry Women’s Haven and Southam Fosse Foodbank.

It was a ‘full house’ for the firm’s second successful bingo event, held at Cubbington Sports and Social Club in the summer and organised by Legal Secretary Britanie Jeffery.

Britanie Jeffery said: “We had another great evening, lots of laughter – the room was full to capacity, everyone of all ages seems to enjoy a game of

bingo. We would like to thank everyone for their support including all the businesses who were very generous with their raffle prize donations.

“My initial fundraising target was £1,000 so to have doubled it was way beyond what we had hoped for.”

A smoothie bike was available for children to try out, pedalling and generating power to blend a healthy mixed berry smoothie. Pupils also received a set of ‘It's Fun to be Active’ books as a keepsake from Health for Life for their school libraries.

The Health for Life initiative is funded by Mondelēz International and delivered in partnership with Services For Education and The Conservation

Volunteers (TCV). Since its launch in 2011, Health for Life has engaged 203 schools and reached more than 230,000 children and adults in Birmingham.

The ‘Take a Breath’ campaign first launched in Birmingham in July 2021 and following its success, the Taskforce have undertaken more local activity in the city to help build the public’s understanding of lung disease and the importance of good lung health.
