moment. But just knowing that she’s not going to judge me too harshly as I figure out the character was kind of a relief. That helped.
How quickly did you and director Matt Reeves settle on what you wanted to bring to this particular version of Bruce Wayne in the film? I mean it was pretty radically different just in the script. And it took me a second to really realise what had even happened, basically. He’s not a playboy in it, he’s kind of much more tormented. And it took a second because you kind of think, ‘Well, everyone is expecting him to be a certain way, do I have to add that into your script?’ And he said, ‘No, this is a new type of Bruce Wayne.’ So yeah. The script was just so solid and really easy to interpret.
Were you a Batman fan growing up? Yes definitely. I mean I was dressed up as Batman my entire childhood. This is so bizarre to me. I’d be so curious what my childhood self would think of this.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘Batman ventures into Gotham City’s underworld when a sadistic killer leaves behind a trail of cryptic clues. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans become clear, he must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued the metropolis.’

So Robert, how does it feel to be Batman? It’s weird. It’s only just starting to feel a little bit real now. It’s like, ‘Wait, hold on a second!’ I’m terrified. This is the first time we’ve got a non-friends and family audience seeing it or people that won’t tell me the truth. And so yeah, I’m still terrified. I’ve been terrified for years!
Is this the biggest job of your career so far? Yeahs. And also, I’m glad I’m older. When I was younger I don’t think I’d have been able to handle the pressure of it. But now, it’s just been really, really fun and a really incredible ride.
Are you nervous about the audience reaction? I’m going to be spending a long night on Twitter [laughs]. A long, terrifying night! [laughs] But I’m so proud of the movie and I think it’s so fun and it feels really unique and different.
What was it like when you first put the Batman outfit on? Was it everything you thought it would be? Err yes. When you first put it on, you’re like, it’s so well-designed, the suit. I tried it on piece by piece like over about a month and when the final thing was there, you just immediately want to start punching the mirror you’re looking at and stuff [laughs]. You feel 100 times tougher.
And Zoë Kravitz joins you as Catwoman? She looks incredible. From the screen test it was so obvious it should be her. Even when you see a photo of her - that’s Catwoman. It’s obvious. She lived up to and beyond any expectation I had of her.
What was it like working with Zoë? I mean, luckily, I’ve known Zoë for about ten or eleven years. So even on her screen test, I was still thinking I could get fired at any

So you’ve followed Batman through his many incarnations? Yes and he kind of really represented different sections of my life. The first one I ever saw was probably ‘Batman Returns’ but I grew up on Adam West. I mean when English TV was only four channels, they were still playing re-runs like 40 years later then. I thought it was a really serious TV show [laughs]. I think my costume when I was a kid was the Adam West one.
It must have been quite daunting to take on such an iconic role? I mean the legacy of the part, the actors who’ve played him, they’ve all been such massive parts of my life and my interest in film and why I wanted to be an actor in the first place. It’s just incredible to be a part of it.
Some of the film was shot in Scotland but the schedule there was cut back because of Covid. We were supposed to be there for a month – it was very disappointing. I love Glasgow.
There have been so many delays with this coming out due to the pandemic. How does it feel now it’s finally here? It’s very, very surreal. I mean it’s been a long time. For Matt Reeves this is five years, I’ve been kind of working on this for three years. It’s a relief and the fact that people are still excited about it, it’s just great. I really like it and I’m really proud of it, so that’s kind of extreme relief!
