Gas Safety
Why You Should Have A Specialist Maintain Your Gas Detection System
Gas detection maintenance isn’t at the front of mind for most building owners or managers. Where fixed gas detection is installed, it’s historically been fitted and then forgotten about. A well performing system shouldn’t cause any alarms or draw any attention to itself, unless of course, in the event of detecting gas. It’s for this reason that it’s often ignored.
As we’ve discussed over the last 3 months, if you’ve been following this series, a gas detection system is only known to be working or not working when a known concentration of test gas is applied to each sensor. A gas detection system sitting quietly in the corner of the room with it’s OK lights on, doesn’t mean it will step up and go into alarm at the moment it’s required to.
Viewmyair speak to a lot of sites who, in many cases, ignore the gas detection system, and other cases, have someone in-house go around and test them. Usually when explored further, the person in charge of testing the systems is simply doing a visual check on the LED or display status, and possibly pressing the circuit test button inside, to check the alarm function. This is the equivalent of pressing a fire alarm call point to test that a smoke detector is working on your fire alarm.
Understandably, budget reasons often dictate the reason for taking on in-house maintenance of a gas detection system, but often this is simply not sufficient. Should the worst happen, and the gas detection system not pick up a gas or CO leak and isolate the gas supply, the insurance company starts to ask questions about the maintenance. It will need to be evidenced that the system has been serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines and as specified within BS EN 60079.
