Scalable Strategies For Facilities Managers Shaping The Modern Workplace

Angela Tedder, Technical Designer at Kerr Office Group, explores the evolving role of Facilities Managers in workplace design. With a focus on practical, scalable strategies, this article offers insight into how FMs can champion more inclusive, flexible and human-centric environments that genuinely support their workforce.

The demands placed on today’s Facilities Managers extend far beyond maintaining operations and ensuring compliance. As hybrid work evolves and employee wellbeing takes centre stage, Facilities Managers are now key players in shaping environments that drive productivity, inclusivity and engagement. However, with limited budgets and varied building constraints, how can design decisions be both practical and transformative?

The answer lies in adopting scalable, human-centric strategies that prioritise adaptability, comfort and inclusivity. Below are three focus areas Facilities Managers can implement, regardless of project size or scope, to deliver meaningful impact.

Rethinking Lighting With A Human-Centric Approach Lighting remains one of the most underestimated tools in workplace design. Yet poor lighting can lead to fatigue, disengagement and even trigger sensory overload in neurodiverse individuals. Human-centric lighting (HCL) considers not only the intensity and distribution of light but also its biological and psychological effects.

Facilities Managers can start small by introducing adjustable LED lighting schemes that mimic natural daylight cycles to support circadian rhythms. In spaces where a full HCL system isn’t feasible, consider zonal lighting controls. This allows individuals or teams to adjust light levels based on task, time of day, or personal preference.

For buildings with minimal natural light, look to install adaptable white lighting that changes colour temperature across the day. Even retrofitting desk lamps with adjustable brightness and temperature can significantly improve comfort levels.
