DE S IGN CENTRE
STUDIO ANTON
Studio Anton was founded by Antonia Winkler von Stiernhielm five years ago, and is based in Cambridge. She formerly worked in branding before retraining as an interior designer at KLC School of Design, and is known for her deft combining of the antique and the contemporary.
What inspires you? One thing I absolutely love is natural materials. I’m really drawn to colour and texture and I love using a lot of wood, marble, maybe heavy linens or some plush velvets, and just creating a real mix of things.
What’s the thread that runs through every scheme, regardless of the aesthetic? Texture. It’s important to have a textural journey – it’s not just about colour, shape or form. I also like to have things from all ages and therefore a lot of different materials: some pieces may be slicker and more minimal, some may be antique and more worn out. You need a story, not just a single theme. I'm always asking people, “how do you want to feel within a space – what's the mood?” It's just so lovely when you go into a room and you just want to touch everything: that to me is brilliant design.
Describe your style in three words Elegant, relaxed and textural.
What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? I really like Vaughan and Visual Comfort and I always make a beeline for both of those. They’re very different, but I just like the styles that both of them offer.
ANOUSKA TAMONY
Based in the cobbled Pullens Yards studios near London’s Elephant & Castle, Tamony works as part of a team of three at Anouska Tamony Designs. The KLC School of Design graduate creates homes with warmth, originality and character.
Do you have a specific starting point for a project? Always the homeowner.
Is there any business advice you wish you’d known when you started out? Like many creatives I’m driven by a passion for what I do and have learned to become a business owner in the process. For others starting out, I would advise finding a mentor who understands the fundaments of business who can guide them on their path to entrepreneurship.
What projects are you working on at the moment? Family homes in York, Muswell Hill and Stoke Newington, as well as my own nest!
What are the details that matter the most to you in your work? Colour, textiles, lighting, art and the little quirks that speak personally to each family, couple or individual I work with. Those private references that spark meaning, such as a nod to a honeymoon destination or favourite trip, are what make a home feel like home in my view.
Describe your style in three words Colourful, thoughtful and distinctive.
What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? While exploring hardware options for our Stoke Newington project I discovered Collier Webb’s gorgeous ‘Moon Snail’ cupboard knobs, which we’ve specified for the couple’s walk-in wardrobe.
