THE JOURNAL
COVET NOIR
Adele Lonergan co-founded Covet Noir with Maria Lindgren in 2018, and the studio is known for its warm, neutral aesthetic. “We don’t have aspirations to be massive. I want to keep it fairly small because we're both kind of control freaks,” says Lonergan.
What have you become known for? Our aesthetic has evolved over time, but I think we can describe ourselves as timeless, neutral and classic. There are lots of antiques, and we love art sourcing, and adding personality through texture and materiality rather than giant pops of colour.
Do you have a specific starting point for a project? It all starts with the layout. There's no point jumping straight into the concept before you’ve figured out how each space, and the flow between spaces, is going work. A bad layout is just so upsetting.
Is there any business advice you wish you’d known when you started out? Know your strengths. The second you can, employ someone to do any aspect of the business that is not your strong suit, because you can spend a very, very long time on something you're not very good at. That way you can focus your time on new business, meeting clients and doing the creative side.
What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? The Specified is one of my favourites. I love Australian design and it's hard to get pieces from there in the UK, so it's nice to have that connection.
STUDIO HESSIAN
Having worked for prominent practices including Michaelis Boyd Associates and Grimshaw Architects in Sydney, Scarlett Hessian formed Studio Hessian in 2018. She works between London, Copenhagen and Los Angeles, across both residential and commercial projects.
What inspires you? Architecture. I’ve always been obsessed with it, and I'm actually an architect, but I have fallen more into interior design. The manufacturing process within this industry also gets me going – I love working with furniture and fabric makers, and I have a really great relationship with my contractors.
Do you have a specific starting point for a project? I like to understand my clients first and foremost, and then I start to build on that and show them things that maybe they've never looked at before and get them excited. Then you build a trust, and they go “yes. Just go and do it.”
What projects are you working on at the moment? I've been working on a private home in Venice Beach for clients for about two years, and we're about to start another add-on to the house; I'm also working on their film production company’s new offices, which I'm really excited about.
Describe your style in three words Eclectic, minimalist and modern.
What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? I like Kvadrat: the girls who work there are amazing. Tissus d’Hélène holds a lot of American products, so when I'm working in the States, it's really helpful. And Schumacher: them moving in has been a bit of a game-changer.
