6 Surviving the eastern frontier While Ukraine is understandably taking the most attention, European defence ministries are equally worried about what Moscow might do next. One obvious target for Russian expansion are the Baltic States, especially given their small size and long history in the Soviet Union. How, then, are Estonia and its Baltic neighbours preparing for the possibility of future eastern aggression? And given a changing geopolitical picture, how are they balancing wider Nato efforts with a push towards more local security? Andrea Valentino explores, with help from Colonel Mait Müürisepp of the Estonian Defence Forces.

9 Maintaining excellence Without maintenance, military vehicles are useless. Yet with US service models almost a century old, change is urgently needed. Enter the M1/M2 Service Optimization Pilot, which promises to revolutionise how tanks and other vehicles are looked after. Offering commanders greater flexibility around how they maintain vehicles, as well as simplifying procedures, the revised system is already proving successful. Phoebe Galbraith investigates, speaking to Corey Woods, deputy chief of staff at the US Maneuver Center of Excellence.

16 Multi-domain dominance Nato, a recent press release announced, is transforming into a ‘multi-domain operations’ organisation. Beyond the military buzzwords, however, what does this mean for command and control across the alliance? Part of the answer involves moving away from the current commander-centric approach to

leadership, instead giving more lateral to troops on the ground. That’s echoed by new technology, with 5G and AI allowing the deployment of flexible mobile command posts and handheld devices. Phoebe Galbraith investigates, speaking to Brigadier General Jarmo Vähätiitto, chief of the C5 at the Finnish Defence Command, to understand what all this could mean for operations on the ground.

Future soldier 21 All guns blazing

All military personnel rely on the latest technology to optimise their performance – but securing the right kit is especially crucial for special forces operatives. From backpacks to hi-spec weapons, there are constant efforts to innovate, with the United States military’s new lightweight medium machine gun, due to go live in 2026, is the latest example. Spokespersons from US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and Nato’s allied Special Operations Forces Command (SOFCOM) tell Jim Banks why new small arms could be among several potentially game- changing developments.
