f all the grim lessons from the war in Ukraine, one of the most salient surely involves the awesome role of technology. From pre-invasion cyberattacks that crippled Kyiv’s communications in the conflict’s first crucial hours, to the 200,000 drones the Zelensky government launched in 2023 alone, this is surely one of the most technically sophisticated conflicts yet. To a large extent, this edition of Defence & Security Systems International reflects this preoccupation. Dan Cave, for instance, reports on the legacy of a Russian hack in Germany, which revealed embarrassing details of the country’s plans to send Taurus missiles to its beleaguered allies in Kyiv. For his part, Tallha Abdulrazaq investigates how ones and zeros can support military training, exploring how virtual platforms are now so realistic that they can closely mimic battlefield conditions – yet they still cannot replace live exercises. As so often in the defence space, meanwhile, AI is another clear area where technology is improving. At sea, we consider how automated minesweepers could keep battleships safe – hardly immaterial given the dangers faced by vessels in the Black Sea. In the air, Lauren Hurrell delves into how machine learning is being deployed to spot and defeat enemy UAVs, part of a global sector that could be worth $84bn by 2030.

Tech, nein? O

All the same, it’d be wrong to suggest that this issue of the magazine is all about shiny new kit. On the contrary, several of our stories show how old-fashioned military virtues remain to battlefield success – however much automation or computers may help. In our Land systems section, for example, Phoebe Galbraith talks to armour experts about how updated maintenance procedures can breathe new life into old vehicles. And in our Regional focus story, on how the Baltic States are thinking about the looming Russian threat, a senior officer in the Estonian Defence Forces stresses the importance of military and civilian morale in keeping his nation safe. Whatever happens with drones or cyber strikes over the years ahead, there’s surely another lesson there somewhere.
