he genesis of Patria TREMOS can be traced back to the lessons learned from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The need for highly mobile and responsive firepower became starkly evident, prompting the Finnish Defence Forces to seek a solution that could address these challenges. Patria, with its rich heritage in mortar development and a deep understanding of modern warfare, answered the call with TREMOS. “The requirements came from the Finnish Defence Forces,” explains Lauri Pauniaho, director of weapon systems at Patria. “They’ve been studying the Ukrainian conflict, and the mobility requirement came from lessons drawn from that war. You have to be able to move fast, open fire quite quickly and then leave the firing position even more quickly.” Patria’s TREMOS is a modular, vehicle- mounted mortar system that can be easily integrated onto a wide range of platforms, from light tactical vehicles to heavy trucks. This adaptability ensures that TREMOS can be rapidly deployed to any theatre of operation. The system’s unique design eliminates the need for dismounting or ground support, allowing for swift emplacement and displacement. Within 60 seconds of arriving at a firing position, TREMOS can be ready to deliver accurate and devastating firepower – and then operators can move off, as if they were never there. “It is vehicle-mounted and you don’t need to dismount the crew to open fire,” says Pauniaho. “This means you can drive to a location, fire and drive off without ever having dismounted from the vehicle.”
Modular design, maximum customisability
TREMOS has been designed with modularity at its core. The system can be

This focus on cost-effectiveness does not come at the expense of capability. TREMOS utilises proven recoil technology, ensuring exceptional accuracy and stability even when firing at high elevations or with the largest payloads, and while providing full 360-degree traverse. “We went to the cheaper end of the scale by having manual aiming and manual loading,” explains Pauniaho. “With options like automatic loading and other automated functions, you need a lot of money, but you can get several units of TREMOS for the price of one of these other sophisticated systems, but now with significantly more battlefield mass.”

configured to meet specific operational requirements, with options for various ammunition types and calibres. This modularity extends to the integration module, which can be tailored to fit different vehicle platforms or even removed entirely for floor mounting in open-hatch vehicles.
“The Finnish Defence Forces wanted the weapon to be able to be easily transferred from one vehicle to another,” Pauniaho notes. “The requirement for mobility was so great that even if the vehicle breaks, we don’t want to lose the weapon. That’s why we invented the integration module.”
