Naval mines for the 21st century
Finland-based company DA-Group provides a range of industry-leading naval mine and underwater surveillance solutions, including modernisation of legacy systems, mine fi eld planning, minelaying, logistics and training.
N
aval warfare has come a long way since its humble beginnings more than 3,000 years ago. Throughout
human history, waterways have played a critical role in our survival, development and prosperity in the form of sustenance and transportation. Fast-forward to the 20th century and to the advent of wide- scale use of both submersible vessels and underwater weaponry, and the focus and true dominance of sea areas is not controlled by what can be seen on the horizon, but instead what happens beneath the surface.
Naval mines are sometimes seen by the general public as spiky balls of terror that
cause havoc for ships without scrutiny, thus posing a threat not only to the aggressor but also to any other vessel sailing in the area, much like the dreaded anti-personnel mines that to this day render past conflict areas unusable. While this has been the case in the past with naval mines, it is not the case today and, most importantly, not where the industry is heading.
As can be seen with every field after an early adoption, developments in technology bring leaps of improvement in performance and, more typically and more noticeably, in safety. This has been the case for cars, space travel and many
other industries, and it is now true for naval mines as well. Modern or modernised naval mines are safe to produce, store and handle logistically due to their inert explosive material. They are also safe to operate, as cutting- edge target detection systems both locate and identify the correct vessel, making it highly precise.
This new generation of safe and precise influence mines offers a whole new set of options for cost-effective coastal defence operations anywhere in the world, making it an attractive choice for any navy. ●
