Microalgae’s value beyond macronutrients

Environmental changes are already happening and will continue to have significant effects on our health and well- being. Viewed as a proactive approach, the adoption of a plant-based diet is becoming increasingly popular as a means to address the limitations with the global food supply and environmental sustainability. Following a plant-based diet is generally linked to positive health outcomes. However, in some cases there can be possible risks related to suboptimal nutrient composition of a person’s diet. For instance, lower intakes of vitamin B12, calcium, iodine, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. These risks can be mitigated by optimal food choices, fortification and supplementation.
