Company insight
n 1981, Acadian Seaplants founded and established the seaweed industry in Canada. Today, it is the largest independent marine plant processing company in North America, and a global leader in aquatic plant products for humans, animals and plants used in more than 80 countries. As a fully integrated company, Acadian Seaplants is responsible for every stage of its operation, including sustainable harvesting and cultivation of marine plants, scientific research and technology development, engineering, manufacturing, market development, sales and technical customer support. Acadian SeaPlus Human Wellness products provide a variety of health and wellness benefits for the expanding nutraceutical, cosmetic and food and beverage industries. The company is the global leader in speciality seaweed cultivation technology, operating the largest land-based, commercial macroalgae cultivation facility in the world and providing the highest level of biomass control, supply security and traceability for customers.

unaware of their unique complex bioactives. They contain far more than terrestrial plants in terms of providing natural nutritional and functional benefits for product formulations across the functional food, nutraceutical and cosmetics sectors. Whether it’s your insides (gut microbiome) or your outside (skin, hair, nails), your head (brain) or your heart (cardio), seaweed has evolved to contain and provide natural antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-ageing and other powerful protections. While there is still a lot to uncover, the seaweed secrets we have learned – about some of the thousands of species of these nutritionally dense, highly versatile, bioactively complex marine plants – are being uncovered everyday by researchers around the globe. Still, it’s a relatively small community, and while peer-reviewed white papers are increasingly published, there is still much to learn and even more to share with product formulators who are looking for advanced functionality for their products, as well as those who want to keep pace with consumer trends. Consumers look for fewer ingredients in their products, cleaner

labels and, importantly, traceable and sustainable ingredients.
The benefits of seaweed have been recognised and utilised by the agriculture industry for decades. They have long been understood by agronomists to be an important input alongside fertilisers, providing a biostimulant-type effect to activate necessary soil microbes – encouraging strong root growth and defending plants against drought, heat and other environmental challenges. Ranchers and veterinarians have benefited from the research, showing increased conception rates and milk production across many species when seaweed is a regular feed ingredient. Human research has been slower to evolve. Partially because human research is significantly more expensive than trials on plants and animals. A great deal of research is conducted through universities and requires large funding over long periods of time. Naturally, large biochemical companies are well financed and positioned to support long research programmes, testing the efficacy of substitutions for many natural ingredients, which can then be brought to scale and do not count on disparate and varied biomasses around the globe. Emerging technologies are bringing research costs down and there is reason to hope that seaweeds may hold important secrets that could lead to scientific breakthroughs on widespread diseases, such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and cardiovascular. We are rapidly moving beyond seaweed as merely a natural source for normal thyroid function. The secrets of seaweed are quickly unravelling and provide an effective food, nutraceutical and cosmetics component for antioxidant, prebiotic, antiviral, anti-ageing and immune stimulation, as well as several other beneficial properties. ●
