The postbiotic from Japan for your gut microbiome
In a culture obsessed with all things ‘biotic’, postbiotics have long been overlooked. As Mitsubishi Corporation Life Sciences Europe is set to bring its postbiotic L-137 to the European market, the company highlights some of the potential benefits and the versatility of this exciting ingredient.

eveloped and produced in Japan, heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum (L-137) is brought to the European market by House Wellness Foods and Mitsubishi Corporation Life Sciences Europe. Defined as a ‘postbiotic’, the ingredient enters the market at a time when there is increased interest in the gut microbiome and the role that ‘biotics’ can play in this field. More research is pointing to the complex relationship between gut health and the immune system, cognitive health and its potential link with diseases. Pre-, pro- and postbiotics are all terms that are often used interchangeably, but they refer to distinct elements of the digestive
process. The relationship between the ‘biotics’ is a critical one, as each component plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and function of the gut microbiome.
The key benefits of L-137 Postbiotics offer an interesting alternative or even addition to pre- and probiotics. L-137 specifically has characteristics that offer exciting opportunities for new product development. L-137 is a unique ingredient that was first isolated from a fermented fish and rice dish from Japan called narezushi. The specific L-137 strain stood out due to its ability to modulate the immune system. A key benefit of L-137 is that it is highly stable
in high temperatures and acidic conditions. This makes it possible to develop products that require heat treatment, such as UHT treatment for shelf stable drinks, or use in fruit juices with a lower pH level. This offers possibilities to create new product formats that are ‘good for gut health’, maintain immune system and even promote skin health in wide array of product formats. It is also worth noting that studies show synergies between L-137 and vitamins C, E and beta-glucans. This means it may be possible to use official EFSA Health claims in products that utilise this synergy. ●
