Company insight Contactless on deck
It is crucial at sea to receive accurate information when you need it. A quick response time is vital for the safety of passengers and crew. That’s why Valmet Automation has extended the use of its web-based Valmet DNA User Interface to bring numerous innovative advantages to the marine industry, enabling unsurpassed automation onboard.
T
o help vessels move to a more modern level of sophisticated automation, Valmet has been embracing digital transformation and leveraging technologies to further develop its automation solutions. This helps free up crew resources for more demanding tasks. The new Valmet DNA User Interface (DNA UI) extends the use of the automation system beyond the traditional engine room. Leveraging modern web technologies, this innovative user interface provides a more enhanced experience and view of process control and monitoring operations on board a vessel. Now, information can be shared on board with a secure web-based solution. The walls of the control room are no longer a limit. Built to the latest web standards, Valmet DNA UI is open for monitoring access from any mobile or handheld device. And most importantly – cybersecurity has been integral to the complete design process from the start.
new way to make the workflow more intuitive. The web-based solution helps an officer receive processed information on the bridge, for example, or the chief engineer can access data about the machinery system from a tablet. Wherever you are on board, you are able to see the complete situation around the vessel. Using the new user interface minimises operational risks and enhances the decision making. Valmet DNA UI allows all users to collaborate regardless of their physical location. Instead, it moves with the users, anywhere they go, using mobile devices to perform the necessary monitoring or reporting tasks.
Data for role-based access Although more information is now available at any given time, vessels today have fewer crew members to operate the ships. Therefore, Valmet has created a special role-based user access, allowing crew and owner supervisors on shore to get just the right information they need.

Role-based access offers each user the exact information they need to perform his or her own role and task. Instead of pre-
engineered content, Valmet automation enables the user to easily create relevant content and share it with other users, on board and onshore. All process information is then readily available for the right persons to perform their jobs.
Various views as you prefer Valmet can build the control room workstations, as preferred, with different levels of information, overview, monitoring- controlling-analysis, detailed process information and operating, supportive and diagnostic information.
The most important process information is always easily available. Arranging different page styles and types of information on different hierarchy levels provides the user with a top-down view of all process information. This improves the overall perception of the system status, leading to a better user experience and better situational awareness. Valmet DNA User Interface presents the process in a very user-oriented way using colour selection and graphic design according to modern user-interface design principles. Visual, well-structured and easy-to-understand dashboards, key parameter overviews, process and sub- process views allow users to better monitor and control the process.
Secure system for extra cybersecurity
In addition, technical security controls and cybersecurity functions built into the system applications ensure that the automation network and host computers are continuously protected from threat – whatever form it make take. The system can be accessed with a controlled web browser over secure HTTPS communication protected by web certificates. Valmet offers regular security updates and other cybersecurity lifecycle services to make sure the system stays secure over the long term. ●
