Repair and deliver: three centuries of ship rebuilding at Cadiz Bay


With a proven track record of delivering outstanding docking, repair and refit services for fleets, Navantia remains a go to specialist for cruise ship repair as sailing is back underway and business returns to the Atlantic.


ver the past few decades, Navantia has developed a specialised business line for the repair and refit of large cruise ships in its facilities at Cadiz Bay, building on a long tradition providing ship repair and marine services to all types of naval units and merchant vessels for almost three centuries. The evolution of this specialised business line has been very successful, moving from eight cruise ships repaired in 2018 up to a total of 13 cruise ships in 2019 – including six major revitalisation projects, as well as several other traditional cruise vessel repair projects. In 2020, the cruise sector was very much affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The initial impact of the global coronavirus outbreak did not prevent Navantia from completing ongoing projects, although the rapid escalation of the crisis caused the postponement of several repair projects scheduled for early and mid 2020. This included some major conversion and reactivation projects, which had a significant impact on the yard’s short- and medium-term repair programme.

Some of those docking and repair projects, which had to be initially postponed, were rescheduled to be undertaken at Navantia’s yards later in the year, although most of them eventually got postponed to 2021. Furthermore, the impact the pandemic has had on business performance is not

However, despite the global crisis, a total of five cruise ships were finally repaired and successfully delivered by Navantia Cadiz Bay in 2020.

Up until September 2021, Navantia had already repaired and delivered five Royal


Caribbean cruise ships and is currently involved in the repair of two other cruise ships from Royal Caribbean and Carnival (eight repaired, four being repaired for the Royal Caribbean Group, and four from Carnival). For the rest of 2021, the company have an important number of cruise ships either confirmed or with preliminary reservations. However, it is worth mentioning that due to the effects of the pandemic most of the work carried out on theses cruise ships is chiefly limited to the marine part, without much focus on hotel refits. If these forecasts and reservations are confirmed, Navantia Ship repairs at Cadiz Bay will likely reach a record high in terms of the number of cruise ships repaired in one year. Commercial action is still being carried out to close more contracts for cruise ship repairs and
