ith the year drawing to a close, the hospitality industry has enjoyed a strong summer with international tourist arrivals to Europe only 3.2% below 2019 levels. This rebound is thanks to resilient intra- European travel and an influx of American tourism, fuelling and benefiting from the growing demand for southern European and Mediterranean destinations. However, despite increased inflation, cost of living and significant geopolitical challenges, the industry is confident for a full recovery – in fact 2023 is expected to achieve 91% of pre-pandemic international arrivals and further forecasts predict Europe will reach 2019 numbers by 2024, a whole year earlier than anticipated. With the industry on track for recovery, hotels are still struggling to recruit the staff they need and attract young people to the life of a hotelier. With staffing shortages remaining a major issue for hotels since the pandemic, we investigate on page 41 to learn how hotels are working to attract more people to the industry. As technology continues to evolve, it’s no surprise that hotels are implementing new gadgets and gizmos into their spa and wellness offerings. From cryotherapy to multi-sensory experiences, we hear how hotels are stepping up their wellness to new technological heights on page 46. And finally as environmental concerns grow in importance within all industries and sectors, food wastage remains a major emergency facing the planet. With thousands of tonnes of food being cooked and served every year, some hotels are stepping up to cut the amount of food wasted every year and even introducing new ways to use leftover food. We find out more on page 52. As the hotel industry works to a full recovery, the future looks promising. I hope you enjoy the latest edition of Hotel Management International and I wish you a happy holiday season.
