Spa & wellness
“One of our hallmarks is ‘comforts of home’,” describes Sothemla Ningshen, the spa manager at the Nautilus. “Each day of the Slumber Ritual features two hours of carefully chosen treatments using hand- picked products and scents, focusing on creating a calming environment, soothing guests, relieving stress and ultimately inducing sleep.”

Ayurvedic scalp treatment, a traditional Indian warm- oil massage and reflexology, all carried out in a bed of warm quartz sand. So far, the response from guests has been positive – to the point that Silversands is considering introducing a dedicated sleep menu to its room-service offering.

On the other side of the globe, on a private Unesco- protected island reserve in the Maldives, the Nautilus provides one of the most remote luxury hideaways in the world. With only 26 beach and overwater residences, it prioritises privacy with a highly personalised approach. Here, there has always been a sharp emphasis on resting well – guests are offered a choice of pillow, sleep kits including lavender masks, facial mist and a diffuser are available on request, and the spa creates bespoke treatments to counter jet lag. This year, it launched a special Slumber Ritual to coincide with World Sleep Day on 17 March, tapping into the sleep tourism trend. At a resort where guests are physically disconnected, the two-day experience ensures they are able to remove themselves mentally from daily stresses.
Among these treatments are a full-body polish, unwinding massages and restorative yoga. During the ritual days, evening turndown (which already involves spraying a lavender mist) sees the preparation of a hot bath filled with soothing salts for guests to return to after dinner, and a warm pot of floral tea will be waiting at their bedside, while calm music plays in the background. The results are tangible – as Ningshen notes, “Guests who have booked the Slumber Ritual are left feeling fully relaxed and have experienced a deep rest during their holiday.” Back in the city, in the epicentre of medicinal excellence, Switzerland’s Beau Rivage hotel takes a scientific approach to sleep enhancement. Its new two-day sleep check-up with on-site specialists includes analysis, stress management and tailored nutrition, with menus created by Michelin-starred chef Dominique Gauthier.
“As soon as the clients arrive at the hotel, they feel like they’re at home,” says Celine Rodellar, head of marketing and communications at Beau Rivage. “Rooms are comfortable and soundproofed, and we offer herbal teas and essential oils for a personalised turn-down service.”
The sleep check-up programme was introduced at the beginning of 2023, in collaboration with Geneva’s Health & Prevention Centre, to provide science-led treatments from the comfort of its rooms. When they arrive, guests – or ‘patients’ – will be given a small medical polysomnography ring to wear on their thumb before going to bed; the next day, they will receive a complete report on their sleep, containing information on oxygen saturation, pulse rate and motion, as well as diagnostics of issues such as sleep apnoea. “All parameters are analysed by a sleep specialist who will discuss the risks and give follow-up advice to the patient,” says Rodellar. The approach is thorough and informative, providing guests with useful insights to tackle sleep issues long-term, while they enjoy panoramic views of Lake Geneva from their rooms.
So, as sleep tourism continues to grow, offerings will undoubtedly become more creative and wide-ranging, and an increasing number of individuals might soon select their hotel and destination based on its sleep credentials. But, for now, guests are still discovering the options that best suit them, while hotels continue to evolve and expand their offerings in the never- ending quest for a perfect night’s sleep. ●
