Sleep is an essential part of our well-being and shapes our experiences the next day. While providing a place to rest is the business of hotels, many are now prioritising sleep, through the design of their bedrooms and tailor-made spa treatments. Brooke Theis speaks to Laurent Ebzant at Park Hyatt New York, Karen Smith at Six Senses Ibiza and Yanni Frivaldo at Silversands Grenada to find out how hotels are prioritising slumber.


he most basic requirement for any hotel is to provide a suitable place for guests to sleep. But, to thrive in a competitive hospitality industry, a number of forward-thinking teams have turned their focus to ‘how’ their guests sleep – exploring various ways to optimise the quality of each individual’s REM cycle. With sleep tourism on the rise this year, travellers are becoming increasingly discerning about their options for a decent night’s shut-eye, making offerings such as aromatherapy menus, tailored exercise programmes and specialised mattresses all the more significant.

At Six Senses Ibiza, for example, a calming Balearic retreat on the Spanish island, rooms are decorated with

natural materials in neutral tones and equipped with blackout curtains to ensure guests are set up for a good night’s sleep. Further to this, the hotel has introduced a comprehensive programme to optimise sleep quality for those guests experiencing strained slumber. “We understand that restful sleep is the foundation for health and well-being,” says Karen Smith, the wellness director at Six Senses Ibiza. “We need to give our body sufficient time to rebuild to function optimally – physically, but also mentally and emotionally. Every third person suffers from sleep imbalances and we wanted to address this.”
