Arnold Laver sees 15% sales drop in 2020, reports stronger trading this year
UK nationwide timber products distributor Arnold Laver has reported a 15% decrease in its annual sales to £123.4m due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. But trading in 2021 is performing strongly. Arnold Laver said the onset of the pandemic severely impacted trading in April and May, 2020 and then to a lesser extent the remainder of the year. “As a result of business restructuring undertaken in 2020 and an improvement in trading conditions, the current financial year has started very strongly,” said director Patrick Guest on behalf of the Arnold Laver board in the company’s
full accounts for the year ended December 31, 2020.
“Early indications show that 2021 revenue and profit are on track to outperform 2019 levels,” he said. An operating profit of £2.8m was recorded for 2020, down from £3.2m in 2019, before amortisation of goodwill and after charging £2m of additional costs associated with central group support. Accsys acquires Lignia assets
Accsys, producer of Accoya wood and Tricoya wood elements, is investing in increasing its Accoya Color production capability by acquiring €1.2m of assets and equipment from former UK-based modified wood producer Lignia Wood Company Ltd and its administrators, ReSolve. The equipment and resources will enable
Accsys to accelerate growth of its premium Accoya Color product: Accoya that is coloured through from surface to core. Launched in just two European markets so far, Accoya Color Gray decking has been met with a very positive reaction and high demand in excess of supply.
Benefitting from added expertise with former Lignia team members joining
the business, Accsys will repurpose the acquired equipment in Barry, Wales, to convert Accoya wood into Accoya Color. This will allow a much more rapid growth in production and availability ahead of launching into more geographic markets and applications, planned for next year. Accsys does not intend to continue with the production of Lignia products. Lignia began commercial production and sales in 2019 and built momentum from the onset. However, sales were impacted due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the company did not secure the necessary funds to continue to develop and grow its product offering to take advantage of the global modified wood market.
Archwood webinar describes perfect storm of Covid and Brexit
Archwood Group met with the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) and CBI Wales for an in-depth webinar discussing two of the biggest issues facing the timber sector right now: Covid-19 and Brexit. Archwood Group held the event to explore how the pandemic and Brexit have affected the timber industry, including the challenges to supply and logistics. The event was led by Ian Price, director of CBI Wales, a not-for-profit business organisation that provides a link between its members and the Welsh and UK
governments. On the panel were Josh Burbidge, managing director of Archwood Group and David Hopkins, managing director of the TTF.
Mr Hopkins explained how Brexit and the pandemic have combined to create a “perfect storm”.
“They’ve both presented barriers to trade and doing business,” he said. “The pandemic has increased demand for timber products, whereas Brexit, over time, will produce a drag on doing business.”

Arnold Laver has rebranded its manufactured door and joinery business to Intelligent Door Solutions, while National Timber Systems covers the engineered wood products businesses.
The company says it is committed to investing in value-added production capacity to support its growth plans and deliver product solutions for customers.
Arbor Forest Products launches Trex digital library
Arbor Forest Products is launching its industry-leading digital asset library for Trex products as well as some of its own complementary products, providing stockists with easy access to media such as images, brochures and technical information.
The North Lincolnshire-based
independent timber importer and processor, which is the exclusive distributor of Trex composite decking products in the UK through its decking division, Arbordeck, is launching the portal due to customer feedback from merchants who are keen to offer their customers a better digital service. “Arbor Forest Products is a business built on a passion for people and customer service, and this is at the heart of everything we do – which is why we’re proud to be providing our stockists with a secure digital asset library for all things Trex, as well as for some our own products,” said Jason Ostler, managing director.
“Our team has worked hard to create a user-friendly portal to help suppliers easily access information and media as and when required,” he continued.
“This launch supports our commitment to supporting merchants in any way we can, and we’re confident that this asset portal will make things that bit easier for stockists. This is just the beginning, and we will continue to develop the portal to include more Arbor Forest Products assets.”
