Latest BMBI figures show merchants Q1 timber and joinery value sales were down 1.4% year-on-year

The latest figures from the Builders Merchants Building Index (BMBI), published in May, show total value sales for Q1 2025 up +0.9% compared to Q1 2024. There was no difference in trading days. However, volume sales increased +3.9%, while prices came down -2.9%.


Eight of the 12 categories sold more in Q1 2025 compared to the same quarter a year before, with services performing best (+5.3%). Heavy building materials (+2%) outperformed total merchants, while the next largest category – timber and joinery products – slipped -1.4% year-on-year. Work wear and safety wear (-3.3%) was the weakest category. Quarter-on-quarter builders’ merchants’ value sales for Q1 2025 were +5.2% higher than the previous three-month period (October to December 2024). Eleven of the 12 categories sold more, with landscaping (+14.1%) increasing the most. Timber and joinery products (+4.2%) grew less. With two more trading days in the most recent period, like-for-like value sales were +1.9% higher than the previous quarter. Volume sales rose +5.8%, while prices dropped -0.5%. Quarter 1 total value sales were boosted by March sales, up +7.2% year-on-year. Eleven of the 12 categories sold more with landscaping (+13.2%) ahead, closely followed by renewables and water saving (+13.1%). Timber and joinery products increased +4.7%. With one extra trading day in the most recent period, like-for-like sales were +2.1% up.
