The Japan Crane Association (JCA) is a Tokyo-based public corporation, approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which aims to prevent work-related accidents involving cranes. It is also an active member of the International Crane Stakeholders Assembly (ICSA), whose primary purpose is to facilitate information sharing and meaningful dialogue between crane industry stakeholders on safety, technical and regulatory issues of concern to the international crane industry. The JCA was first founded
on September 5th, 1963, and it currently has 26 branches and 34 inspection offices. Cranes, derricks, mobile
cranes, elevators, gondolas and construction lifts are all included under the JCA’s remit. The JCA describes itself as a ‘technical information source’, achieving its objectives via technical research and surveys, education, inspection, examination, and the provision of technical guidance.
OPERATOR TRAINING JCA also provides operator training, as well as various health, safety and skills courses to assist in the prevention of accidents. As a national drafting body
for ISO/TC96 (Crane and related equipment) and the secretariat of ISO/TC96/SC5 (Use, operation and maintenance), JCA has what is describes as a ‘major role’ in
oday reports.
international crane standards, recognising the increasing need for ‘technical exchange’ with overseas groups. In addition, JCA acts as a drafting body for national standards and crane safety regulations, conducting research on behalf of the Japanese Government.
RAISING AWARENESS As well as the monthly journal ‘Crane’, JCA also publishes useful information on its website:
www.cranenet.or.jp. Other publications include a crane year book and textbooks on licensing, skills and training. In order to promote safety
consciousness and aid accident prevention, JCA holds ‘Crane Day’ every year on 30th September. The first Crane Day was in 1980. The Association also holds an
annual ‘National Crane Safety Conference’ and the ‘National Competition of Crane Safe Operation’, attracting participants from across Japan. As part of Crane Day a
publicity poster is created and distributed. The images on the left are a selection from recent years. We think you’ll agree, they’re certainly eye-catching!
The next ICSA meeting will be held on October 26th, 2022, Munich, Germany.
