Tilbury has added a third LHM 550 mobile harbour crane from Liebherr. It will support the port’s expanding activities, including the operations of Aggregate Industries’ cement grinding and import terminal facility, set to open in 2026. Paul Dale, COO of Forth Ports, the

parent company of the Port of Tilbury, emphasises the significance of the new crane in achieving the company’s ambitious net-zero targets. “We are investing in greener technology to ensure that our operations are sustainable,” he says. “The Liebherr LHM 550 will support our growing bulks and heavy-lift work and further our commitment to environmentally responsible operations.” Equipped with Liebherr’s LieGEN

energy recovery system, the crane captures and reuses energy, improving operational efficiency while reducing fuel consumption. It also complies with the latest emission standards, showcasing the port’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. Additionally, the crane is capable of running on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a renewable fuel that will support Tilbury’s goal of reducing carbon emissions in its operations. Its electric-ready design also positions it for a future transition to zero-emission operations. Robert Alexander, port equipment and maritime cranes sales manager at Liebherr Great Britain, says: “The LHM 550 mobile harbour crane marks another important milestone in our collaboration. Its advanced green technologies and future-ready design align perfectly with Forth Ports’ sustainability objectives and operational growth plans.” The LHM 550 crane has been specifically

outfitted with advanced technology to enhance the port’s logistical operations, including an over-pressure system to protect the machinery when handling granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), a low- carbon alternative to traditional cement. This system helps prevent the aggressive material from entering the machine’s components, ensuring efficient and smooth operations. The crane’s corrosion control is also reinforced by a specialised paint finish, similar to those used on Liebherr’s offshore cranes, offering long-term durability even in harsh environments. The fully assembled crane provides

LONG-TERM VISION In some cases, sustainability is about equipment longevity as well as reducing carbon emissions.

Belgian logistics giant Katoen Natie

has ordered four all-electric Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbour cranes for its Port of Antwerp operations. The order includes a ten-year service level agreement. Katoen Natie is investing in Konecranes

Gottwald harbour cranes for several terminals at the Port of Antwerp, as part of its modernisation programme. This latest order is comprised of two

ESP.9 cranes each with a maximum lifting capacity of 200t. The cranes are equipped with Tandem-lift Assistant, enabling a combined maximum lifting capacity of 400t. It also includes two ESP.8 cranes each with 150t lifting capacity.

All four feature a Konecranes all-electric

drive system, combining an external power supply with rechargeable batteries. “Katoen Natie has chosen Konecranes

Gottwald mobile harbour cranes after a thorough evaluation of the existing solutions in the market,” says Tom Brouwers, energy manager at Katoen Natie. “Konecranes’ all-electric drive concept is the best choice for achieving our goals in sustainable port operations while also offering a new level of performance.” The holistic ten-year service-level

agreement with predictive servicing is based on a condition-based monitoring system from Konecranes Service Frontline in Belgium. To minimise downtime, all four cranes come equipped with Konecranes TRUCONNECT for remote condition monitoring. Special spare parts packages ensure fast and efficient maintenance. “This was a long-term project where
