CYBER THREAT In addition, Ports Australia is calling for action to bulletproof the sector against cyber threats. “Cyber security at our ports remains a critical issue for Australian trade and we need a collaborative approach to address growing threats,” says Gallacher. “Historically, legislation has focused on physical security activities and it’s never been more important than now to include cyber in this. A dedicated forum would bring together government and industry expertise to ensure we are prepared for any cyber security incidents.” Ports Australia has also highlighted the
need for a more streamlined process for reporting cyber incidents. “Maritime security plans are built
around an identifiable port land area,” adds Gallacher. “Cyber threats do not recognise maps or postcodes. We must work collaboratively at a national level to optimise security. Ports Australia supports a fit-for-purpose security legislative framework that is risk-based, cost-effective and reduces the regulatory burden. We look forward to working with the government to ensure the reforms achieve these goals.”

and assisting to build a resilient regional port network. “We are committed to strengthening the
relationships with our Pacific neighbours to foster increased cooperation and address common challenges,” says Gallacher. “Quite frankly, our security relies on our nation’s ports. We need to ensure they continue to thrive so that they can connect us to the world into the future.”
COMPETITION Of course, Oceania faces competition from the wider Asia-Pacific region. PSA Singapore is the world’s largest container transshipment hub, handling 40.9 million TEUs in 2024. Kalmar has recently renewed its service
agreement with PSA Singapore, covering maintenance and repair work on PSA’s cargo-handling fleet. This includes empty container handlers, terminal tractors and forklift trucks.
Thomas Lim, director, services, Kalmar SSEA, says: “We are pleased to be able to strengthen our long-term co-operation with

Its automated container handling system, provided by Konecranes, consists of 20 automated stacking cranes (ASCs), remote operating stations (ROSs), and associated container yard infrastructure. Konecranes also provided ten ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and five straddle carriers. In Malaysia, Northport (Malaysia) Bhd – a member of MMC Group – has signed an agreement to acquire four units of super post-panamax container handling ship-to- shore gantry crane from ZPMC. The investment is part of Northport’s commitment to enhancing its terminal handling capabilities to efficiently serve larger and more advanced container vessels. The Reinventing Northport programme, initiated in 2016 following the takeover of Northport by MMC, aims to enhance terminal facilities, upgrade equipment and strengthen Northport’s competencies to improve customer satisfaction and drive business growth. Two of these new quay cranes provide a
24-container outreach, twin-lift capability, and a lifting capacity of 65t, adding to Northport’s existing cranes capable of handling ultra large container vessels (ULCV). The other two new quay cranes feature an 18-container outreach, twin-lift handling capability and a lifting capacity of 55t. Manufacturing by ZPMC began in December 2024, with delivery to Northport expected in the second quarter of 2026. ZPMC has previously delivered six quay
cranes to the group in 2019, and 34 RTG cranes in 2023. It is currently completing delivery of a further 12 electric RTGs.
ZPMC is providing cranes to Northport, with delivery expected in the second quarter of 2026.
