The nuclear industry, a key player for a low-carbon society and a responsible future
THIS SPECIAL ISSUE has been produced ahead of the World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE), a major event for the civil nuclear industry. The meeting takes place from 30 November to 2 December and is expecting 18,000 participants from 55 countries, who will be able to meet face to face with some 600 exhibitors.
The theme of WNE2021 is ‘The nuclear industry, a key player for a low-carbon society and a responsible future’. It is chaired by Sylvie Bermann, Ambassador of France and President of WNE, who says she is certain that nuclear must play a crucial role in the energy transition to low-carbon society.
Widespread recognition of the role that nuclear power can play in the mitigation of climate change has continued to grow since the International Energy Agency’s first report on nuclear in two decades, warned, in 2019, that a decline in nuclear energy capacity would threaten climate goals and supply security unless advanced economies find a w y to e end the operating lives of their
a way to extend the operating lives of their
reactors. Nuclear industry representatives were encouraged to have the ’right questions’ asked of them at the recent COP26 meeting in Glasgow.
As well as pursuing life extensions, many utilities are now looking at small modular reactors (SMRs) or advanced reactors for the future. Canadian utility OPG’s stake in a microreactor demonstration project at Chalk River, runs alongside refurbishing its Darlington nuclear station. Interest in small reactors has also been expressed by remote communities or heavy industries, who up to now had no alternative to diesel generation. WNE will examine the challenges and opportunities of using these designs in future energy systems.
We hope this issue gives you a snapshot of what to expect at WNE2021 and we encourage you to visit the Nuclear Engineering International team on stand M39.
