EDF CYCLIFE | ADVERTORIAL
Cyclife’s Waste-Led Decommissioning drives value
THROUGHOUT THE LIFE CYCLE of nuclear facilities, and in particular during their decommissioning, the management of radioactive waste (including metallic waste) requires the implementation of dedicated processes or facilities to extract, treat, condition and store them in a sustainable manner. As the number of decommissioning projects increases, Cyclife offers nuclear operators innovative, integrated and proven solutions to meet this challenge.
Your strategic partner for decommissioning and waste management Cyclife is EDF Group’s specialist company providing services in the management of radioactive waste and nuclear dismantling for customers worldwide. The company provides long-term bespoke solutions for customers integrating dismantling and waste management services that reduce costs, shorten programmes and reduce waste generated, as well as recycling valuable material through its European subsidiaries. The three nuclear licensed sites of Cyclife in the UK, Sweden and France, treat very-low to low- level waste, providing services such as large component management, waste volume reduction, material recycling, melting, incineration and pyrolysis, as well as consultancy to prepare and optimise on-site operations. They provide best available techniques for waste packaging, volume reduction, and material recycling. Cyclife also owns three engineering and expertise
centers with highly-skilled engineers for the design of workshops, platforms and tools, notably remotely operated, used to perform dismantling operations. They all use 3D digital tools both to design these solutions and to optimise the overall sequence of dismantling or waste management operations. Cyclife Engineering is dedicated to the decommissioning of light-water reactors, along with the designing of radioactive waste storage and treatment facilities. Graphitech, a joint venture company between Cyclife and Veolia Nuclear Solutions, focuses on the dismantling of graphite reactors and the development of innovative remote tooling. Cyclife Digital Solutions offers a robust digital tool, DEMplus® for nuclear, a software based on 3D real- time simulations to obtain scenario costs, lead times, waste flows and dosimetry. Estelle Desroches, CEO of Cyclife said: “Cyclife is a unique group that allows its customers to have access to a combination of specialised skills in decommissioning project management, advanced dismantling technology development and waste treatment facility design, as well as industrial waste treatment services. Working with Cyclife allows both to benefit from extensive feedback of similar operations, and to implement a systemic approach to decommissioning and waste management operations that reduces interfaces, optimises schedules, costs and final waste volumes.”
Waste-Led Decommissioning for contaminated large components For the management of large components, Cyclife houses unique capabilities and expertise that integrate chemical and mechanical decontamination. Large contaminated components are transported off-site as one-piece, saving costs by shortening outages and decommissioning schedules, and also reducing waste for disposal throughout clearance and recycling. Cyclife’s volume-reduction rate can be up to 95% and the material recycling rate up to 80%, utilising clearance for a steam generator. Cyclife’s highly qualified teams are committed from project initiation to completion.
A wide range of innovative, integrated and proven solutions In France, 11 reactors of four different technologies are being dismantled. EDF’s projects allow Cyclife to get a large experience by implementing its approach on a wide scale, as well as to develop and propose innovative solutions that are qualified directly on dismantling sites or in a dedicated test center for the more complex operations concerning graphite reactors dismantling (an industrial demonstrator operational in 2022). ■
