NEW PROJECTS In February 2012, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) voted to approve Southern Company’s application to build and operate two new reactors in Georgia, Vogtle 3 and 4. The new Vogtle reactors are the first new reactors to receive construction approval in more than 30 years and are due start up in Q2 2022 and Q1 2023, respectively. The NRC approved South Carolina Electric and

Gas Company’s application to build Virgil C. Summer 2 and 3 in South Carolina, but construction on these reactors stopped in 2017. NuScale has become the first SMR developer

to receive design approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and plans to start work on the first deployment in 2025 at the Idaho National Laboratory site.

Hayward Tyler, a global leader in performance-critical pumps and motors for the energy sector, recently acquired US-based Energy Steel & Supply Co, a

manufacturer of machined products and components for the civil nuclear power industry. A division of Avingtrans PLC, Hayward Tyler has more than 40

years of experience in the nuclear power market, with over 600 pumps in active service in nuclear applications across the world. The acquisition will expand the company’s nuclear capabilities and product lines for new and existing customers. “This investment is part of our wider effort to cultivate our engineered pumps and motors division,” said Steve McQuillan, CEO of Avingtrans. “The capacity and geographic presence of Energy Steel provides an important strategic opportunity for Hayward Tyler.”

Paragon has been helping the nuclear industry tackle challenges

for more than 30 years. It provides nuclear energy facilities with proven reductions in direct costs, parts inventory, improved process efficiency, and obsolescence solutions. Its track record of services directly address and positively impact the challenges facing the industry today. Speaking in Nuclear News Paragon’s

President and chief executive Doug Van Tassell spoke about having spare parts available quickly, efficiently, and at a good value, and said the pandemic had put a bigger focus on the accuracy and availability of critical parts.

H3D® offers highest-performing imaging spectrometers that

quickly identify and localise gamma-ray sources with a single measurement. Recently H3D has been working with National Geographic-contributing photographer Mike Hettwer to combine its radiation-imaging technology with DSLR-quality photography. A combined radiation and optical photograph of a tourist in Chernobyl was published in the April 2020 issue of National Geographic celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth day.

RSCC Wire & Cable products have been installed in over 130 nuclear

plants throughout the world. Its teams are designing products to meet 60 year cable life expectancy and increased radiation resistance.

General Atomics (GA) recently announced that Nuclear

Technologies and Materials (NTM) division has been integrated into GA’s Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) group. It will provide greater synergies and collaboration on several critical activities and apply GA’s technologies to develop new market opportunities in advanced materials, energy, and space.
