PHASE OUT In 2020 Belgium’s coalition government committed to a nuclear phaseout, initially planning to remove 5.93GW of capacity by 2025. It kept open the possibility of 20-year life extensions for two units, but in March 2021 Engie said it had halted work on the extension. Those decisions and the possibility of a switch to gas have come under pressure during recent gas price spikes.
In the near future, Belgian nuclear engineering could be at
NUCLEAR SITES Belgium has seven nuclear reactors generating about half of its electricity, three at TIhange and four at Doel. In 2019 they jointly produced 43.5GWh - 47.6% of total electricity production.
